Southwell Racing Tips & Predictions – Wednesday 1st April 2026
Six races on the Southwell card today and, yes, our Southwell racing tips are built around a couple of short ones that look hard to get away from, plus one or two prices that are simply bigger than the figures suggest they should be. Going and distances aren’t published in the race info we’ve got for this meeting, so we’re leaning on what we can measure properly: current marks, topspeed ratings, recent form, and proven course angles.
The headline course angles from our data analysis: Always Busy has a proper Southwell profile (3 runs, 1 win, 66.67% placed), while Corsican Caper is a regular here (9 runs) and knows every blade of grass. On the people side, if you like following strong local strike-rates, Sean Bowen (21.77% wins from 317 rides) and Jonjo O’Neill Jr (21.88% from 96) are the two jockeys you want on your side round here. Trainer-wise, Olly Murphy has the volume and the punch (52 Southwell winners from 255 runners), while Dan Skelton brings his usual efficiency (89 from 439).
Let’s get into the race-by-race. These Southwell racing tips are opinionated for a reason: there are races on this card where the market looks right… and one where it’s left something on the table.

14:30 – Book The Bistro At Southwell Racecourse Handicap Chase (GBB Race)
Race Details: Distance | Class 4 | Going | Prize Money | Jumps
Six runners and it’s a neat little handicap chase rather than a war. The market has latched on to Hell Hound, but there’s a proper debate here because the strongest speed figure in the field belongs to Fern Hill (topspeed 100) with Always Busy close behind (98). That matters in small fields where you often end up with a tactical affair and the best engine can bail you out when the pace gets messy. Our course notes flag Always Busy as a Southwell operator (3 runs, 1 win, 66.67% placed), which is exactly the sort of angle you want when you’re trying to split closely-matched types. Queens Wish brings rock-solid consistency (633133) and is almost guaranteed to run her race, even if she might not have the same “pop” on the numbers.
Top Selections
WIN – Fern Hill (Jack Quinlan / Ben Case) | Form: 152542 | Rating: 113 | Draw: | Weight: 168
At 11, he’s not getting any younger, but he’s still posting the best topspeed in the race (100) and that’s the cleanest piece of evidence we’ve got. The market has him around 9/4 with bet365 and others, which is perfectly fair in a six-runner tactical chase. I’d rather side with the horse who can actually quicken off a steady tempo than take a chance on one whose recent line includes a P. Quinlan knows him, Ben Case’s old boys can be tough as teak, and if he gets into a rhythm he’s the one I want coming down the last.

Betting Strategy
Small field, so keep it simple: Fern Hill win. If you’re playing forecasts, Fern Hill over Queens Wish is the “solid form” angle, while Fern Hill over Always Busy is the “Southwell angle” angle. Hell Hound is respected given the market strength, but at 5/2 he’s short enough for a horse with a recent P on the page.

15:00 – Easter Family Fun Day 5th April Novices’ Handicap Chase (GBB Race)
Race Details: Distance | Class 4 | Going | Prize Money | Jumps
Another six-runner job, but this one has more moving parts because it’s novices and there’s a bit of volatility baked in. The ratings suggest two at the top: Big Boy Barney and Gilbertina are both on 117, but Gilbertina has the standout topspeed in the whole field at 108. That’s a chunky edge in a race where most are operating in the low-to-mid 90s on that metric. Ukantango is a name you’d usually respect with Sean Bowen booked, but the form tailing off to 9 last time is a niggle. Kayce Dutton is a notable Southwell struggler from our specialist report (0 wins from 7 here), and that’s a red flag when you’re being asked to carry 168.
Top Selections
WIN – Big Boy Barney (Jonathan Burke / Fergal O’Brien) | Form: 235361 | Rating: 117 | Draw: | Weight: 168
He comes here off a win (the “1” at the end of 235361) and you don’t need to overcomplicate it: in novice chases, confidence matters. Burke is a major plus at this track (16.33% wins and a huge 56.12% place rate from our Southwell jockey notes), and Fergal O’Brien is exactly the sort of trainer you want for a straightforward, ready-to-run type. The market has him 11/4 with bet365, which is reasonable rather than stingy, given he’s proven he can get the job done lately. If he jumps clean, he should be bang there turning in.
EACH-WAY – Gilbertina (Tom Midgley / Nick Kent) | Form: 854P43 | Rating: 117 | Draw: | Weight: 156
This is the value angle: she’s the top on topspeed at 108 and she gets weight from the headline pair lugging 168. She’s priced up at 9/2 with bet365, which looks a touch generous when your data says she has the best raw pace in the race. Yes, the form includes a P recently, but she’s been back hitting the frame (43) and that’s often the sign a horse has come out the other side. With only two places on the each-way, I still think she’s the one most likely to hit the shake-up if the favourite misses one.

Betting Strategy
Win bet on Big Boy Barney. If you want a saver that’s actually rooted in numbers, Gilbertina each-way makes sense at 9/2 given she’s the topspeed standout. Intenzo has plenty of tipster love (see below) and should run well, but I’m not taking 10/3 in a novice chase when another has a bigger engine and better price.

15:30 – Download The Racecourse App Raceday Ready Mares’ Standard NH Flat Race (Cond’/Am’) (Cat 1) (GBB)
Race Details: Distance | Class 5 | Going | Prize Money | Jumps
Ten runners and, as with most mares’ bumpers, you’re dealing with a chunk of unknowns. The market has made Queens Charm favourite at around 7/4 (best with betfair) despite no form figures provided in our race card data, which tells you she’s expected to be ready to roll. Frost Moon is the one we can actually quantify: she has a rating of 92 and a topspeed of 33 from her single run (form “8”), which isn’t dazzling but it’s at least something concrete. Beyond that, you’re weighing trainer intent and jockey bookings in amateur/conditional context. It can turn tactical, and it can also turn into a sprint off the bend where the one who travels best wins. This is exactly the kind of race where I’d rather be with a bit of price if we can find it.
Top Selections
WIN – Queens Charm (Callum Pritchard / Ben Pauling) | Form: | Rating: | Draw: | Weight: 156
I’m not reinventing the wheel here: the market is usually the most reliable guide in these bumpers and Queens Charm is the clear one they’ve come for. You’re getting 7/4 with betfair, and the human data backs up the general idea: Ben Pauling has a strong Southwell profile in our trainer notes (35 wins from 196 runners, 58.67% placed) and Callum Pritchard is no back-number here either (15.38% wins at the track). If she’s anywhere near as fit as they’re telling you she is with the price, she rates the clear pick in a race full of question marks.
EACH-WAY – Rosies Honour (Mr Jack Stenhouse / Philip Hobbs & Johnson White) | Form: | Rating: | Draw: | Weight: 156
Ben Morgan has put her up and the price is the key: 7/1 with bet365 in a ten-runner bumper where plenty are guesswork is more than fair. She’s from a powerful operation (Hobbs & Johnson White) and you’re not asking her to win the race outright to make the bet work under 1/5 odds, 3 places. In these, I want one that could travel strongly and just keep finding; if Queens Charm is the “obvious” one, Rosies Honour is the one you can back without feeling robbed by the market.
Danger: No More Teardrops at a best 5/1 (paddypower) is the kind of profile that can easily outrun you if she’s got any tune at all.

Betting Strategy
This is the most “trust the market” race on the card, so I’m happy with Queens Charm to win. For value, Rosies Honour each-way at 7/1 is the sensible play with three places on offer. If you’re doing multiples across our Southwell racing tips, keep stakes sensible here—bumpers can make you look daft.

16:00 – Country And Western Night 25th April Maiden Hurdle (Novices’ Championship Hurdle Qualifier) (GBB)
Race Details: Distance | Class 4 | Going | Prize Money | Jumps
Eight runners and one that absolutely screams “class act” on our numbers. Road To Wembley has the top rating in the field (123) and the best topspeed too (110). That’s not a small edge; that’s a proper gap. After that, you’ve got Top Coeur (119) and Corsican Caper (118) as the credible chasers, with Corsican Caper also a proper Southwell regular (9 runs here, 33.33% placed in our course specialist report). The market reflects the pecking order: Road To Wembley is odds-on at 8/13 everywhere. Sometimes you try to be clever and take them on; other times you accept the obvious and look elsewhere for value in the place market. This looks like the second category.
Top Selections
WIN – Road To Wembley (Sean Bowen / Olly Murphy) | Form: 2 | Rating: 123 | Draw: | Weight: 159
This is your banker on the card. The best rating (123), the best topspeed (110), and you’ve got Sean Bowen—who is basically automatic at Southwell on our data (69 wins from 317 rides). Olly Murphy is also a proper course force (52 winners from 255 runners). The only reason he’s 8/13 rather than 1/4 is because it’s racing and things can happen, but on what we have in front of us he rates the clear pick and is hard to oppose. If he runs to the number, they’re playing for places.
EACH-WAY – Top Coeur (Kielan Woods / Christian Williams) | Form: 3-436 | Rating: 119 | Draw: | Weight: 159
In an eight-runner novice hurdle with 3 places each-way, this is where you can extract some value. Top Coeur is a solid yardstick at 119 and he’s available at a standout 13/2 with bet365. That price implies he’s more of an outsider than his rating suggests, and that’s the angle: he doesn’t need to beat Road To Wembley to land the bet. Kielan Woods is a reliable Southwell pilot (50.99% place rate from 253 rides in our course notes), and this looks like a “booked for a minor role” horse in the best possible way.

Betting Strategy
Road To Wembley is the cornerstone of any multiples and a straight win bet if you’re happy taking 8/13. For anyone who hates odds-on, Top Coeur each-way is the pragmatic alternative with three places on offer. Corsican Caper is the “course rep” if you want a forecast spice, but the numbers still say Road To Wembley is the one.

16:30 – Southwell Racecourse Conference And Events Handicap Hurdle
Race Details: Distance | Class 4 | Going | Prize Money | Jumps
Eight runners and this is the best betting race on the card because you’ve got a shortish favourite with a clear profile, but also two or three lurking at prices who can absolutely have a say if the pace collapses or if the favourite gets taken on too early. Passing Pleasure is the obvious one: progressive form (42-112) and a workable mark (117) carrying 163. Diamond Geezer brings a proper topspeed (108) and has Sean Bowen booked, which always sharpens your pencil at Southwell. Ocean Conquest has a huge rating (123) and a topspeed of 108 too, but the recent form includes 05 and there’s a P in the recent record (-11P05), so you’re being asked to forgive a bit. If you want a pure course-data angle, Kim Bailey & Mat Nicholls (Campaign Trail) are 25% winners here in our trainer notes.
Top Selections
WIN – Passing Pleasure (Charlie Todd / Oliver Greenall & Josh Guerriero) | Form: 42-112 | Rating: 117 | Draw: | Weight: 163
He’s favourite for a reason and I’m not trying to be a hero: the profile screams “still improving” and that’s gold in a handicap hurdle. The best price is 15/8 with paddypower and that’s acceptable in an eight-runner race where the each-way terms don’t really tempt you away from the win bet. He’s not top-rated, but he doesn’t have to be when his recent form is the most compelling in the line-up. If he repeats the level implied by 42-112, he’s the one they all have to beat.
EACH-WAY – Campaign Trail (Harry Bannister / Kim Bailey & Mat Nicholls) | Form: 303-84 | Rating: 122 | Draw: | Weight: 158
Here’s the price play: 8/1 with bet365 for a horse rated 122 carrying just 158 is big enough to get interested, especially with 3 places each-way. The recent figures (…84) will put plenty off, which is exactly why you’re getting the odds. The yard’s Southwell record in our data is sharp (Kim Bailey & Mat Nicholls: 2 wins from 8, 75% placed), and Bannister is a capable local operator too (42.07% placed). If Passing Pleasure gets softened up by something keen, Campaign Trail is the one I want passing tired ones late for a place at least.

Betting Strategy
I’m playing it straight: Passing Pleasure win at 15/8 is the sensible anchor. Then Campaign Trail each-way at 8/1 as the value cover in a race where late closers can pick up pieces. Diamond Geezer is a major danger with Bowen booked, but his price is tight enough and I prefer the bigger each-way angle.

17:02 – Join Southwell Golf Club Mares’ Handicap Hurdle
Race Details: Distance | Class 5 | Going | Prize Money | Jumps
Seven runners, three places each-way on the odds feed, but remember our staking rule: with 6–9 runners we give one win and one each-way selection. This is a fascinating little mares’ handicap because the top of the market is tight: Princesse Milania at 9/4 and Briery Butterfly at 10/3. The numbers say there isn’t loads between them, but Briery Butterfly’s consistency (4-3223) is exactly what you want in these smaller-field handicaps. Belladinotte is the one with the best topspeed in the field (95) and gets in with 152, which is attractive if the leaders go too hard. Venturevango has a grim recent record (90000P) and needs to show a pulse.
Top Selections
WIN – Briery Butterfly (Stan Sheppard / Henry Daly) | Form: 4-3223 | Rating: 96 | Draw: | Weight: 166
In a mares’ handicap where plenty have quirks, give me the honest sort. Briery Butterfly keeps turning up and running her race, and those repeated placed efforts (…223) are often a sign a win is imminent if the race sets up. She’s 10/3 across most firms and that’s fine—no ricks, no fancy storyline, just solid, repeatable performance. Stan Sheppard is also a jockey I’m happy to trust at Southwell on our data (10 wins from 61, 47.54% placed). If she’s in touch jumping the last, I expect her to battle better than most of these.
EACH-WAY – Belladinotte (Harry Bannister / Sara Ender) | Form: 077224 | Rating: 101 | Draw: | Weight: 152
She’s the sneaky one because the raw pace figure is the best in the race (topspeed 95) and she’s not being asked to concede lumps of weight. You can get 11/2 with paddypower, which feels a fairer reflection of her chance than the flat 5/1 elsewhere. Bannister is a positive at this venue too, and the recent form (…224) says she’s knocking on the door. With seven runners and three places, she’s a very playable each-way option, especially if the front two get into a scrap earlier than ideal.

Summary & best bets
Overall, today’s card has a couple of “don’t overthink it” moments and a couple where the price is doing the talking. The standout NAP is Road To Wembley in the 16:00: best rating (123), best topspeed (110), and the Bowen/Murphy Southwell combo is as solid as it gets on our reputable data sources. The Banker is the same horse—if you’re building any multiples from these Southwell racing tips, that’s your foundation.
For Best Value Bet, I’m siding with Campaign Trail each-way at 8/1 in the 16:30. A rating of 122 in an eight-runner handicap with three places screams “bigger than it should be”, and the yard’s course numbers (25% wins, 75% placed) add punch. The Each-Way Special is Top Coeur at 13/2 in the 16:00: you’re basically betting he runs to his 119 mark and picks up a place behind the odds-on machine. That’s the kind of sensible each-way you can live with.
If you want the quick list: Road To Wembley (NAP/Banker), Campaign Trail (value EW), Top Coeur (EW special), plus Passing Pleasure as the most likely winner in the 16:30.
FAQ

Which jockeys are strongest at Southwell on the data?
From our course specialist dataset, Jonjo O’Neill Jr (21.88% wins) and Sean Bowen (21.77% wins) are the two standout riders by win strike-rate with big sample sizes.
Are there any horses with proven Southwell records today?
Yes. Always Busy has 3 Southwell runs with a 66.67% place rate. Corsican Caper has been here plenty (9 runs) and is a regular around the track.
How should I bet small-field races?
With 5 runners or fewer, each-way betting is usually poor value. In the six-runner races on this card, we still keep it tight: one win pick and one each-way pick at most—discipline is the edge.
Why do you include odds comparison tables?
Because price is everything. Our Southwell racing tips are built to highlight where the market is fair and where it’s wrong—like taking 13/2 about Top Coeur for a place chance behind an odds-on favourite.
