EIght races take place at Doncaster on Sunday afternoon, with the action kicking off at 1.25pm. Check out Matthew’s selections for the closing day of the 250th St Leger Festival.
13:25 Doncaster – Land Of Lights Festival At Gullivers Handicap (Class 3) (3yo+ 0-90) – Adrestia 7/1 1pt EW 5 places
Despite the burden of top-weight, Adrestia has dropped to a handy mark. Her four efforts this season haven’t been devoid of promise.
The daughter of Havana Grey was an excellent winner of the Palace of Holyroodhouse Stakes last season. She backed that up in better company when second to Shagraan in the Beverley Bullet.
Adrestia began this season off a mark of 99, finishing a never-dangerous seventh at Windsor. She then had an excuse for a lesser effort at Redcar, where her blindfold was taken off late.
Ascot brought a better effort, a four-length defeat in a race that’s worked out well. Goodwood then saw her catch the eye, travelling strongly in rear before getting short of room.
She came home under hands and heels there. That leaves her on a mark 10lbs below her peak effort.
Cheekpieces are applied, and she can also benefit from this ease in class. The track should suit too, with her best form coming on galloping courses.
13:55 Doncaster Betfred ‘The Classic Bookmaker’ Handicap (Class 2) (4yo+ 0-105) – Pietro 10/1 1pt EW 4 places
Pietro has been out of the frame on just six of his nineteen starts and returned from an 83 day break at Southwell late last month in what looked to be a prep for this, with Jonny Peate getting far from rigorous in the saddle.
Three starts back, he ran an excellent race at Chester to finish a two length third to subsequent winner Dance In The Storm, backing up an impressive win at Wolverhampton in an 18k contest.
James Fanshawe has placed him well throughout his career as he also won the Brighton Sprint Series Final off top-weight last August, and that was followed by a close effort here.
His sole effort over six furlongs in handicaps was that Brighton success, and I suspect their intermediate distance under a patient ride will suit off this last winning mark under the inform Saffie Osborne.
14:30 Doncaster Betfred City Of Doncaster Handicap (Class 2) (3yo 0-100) – Langstone 6/1 1.5pt WIN
I was gutted when Langstone didn’t run at Haydock following the ground debacle, and even more gutted when the ground dried fully up at Carlisle as I thought he had an excellent chance.
That Carlisle form has worked out terrifically well however, he gave 3lbs to his winning stablemate who’s now rated 17lbs higher, and the third is now rated 12lbs higher.
The ground was again too quick at Royal Ascot, but this should be more suitable back over a winning course and distance and he has to be chanced off a mark of 92.
15:40 Doncaster Betfred Mallard Handicap (GBBPlus Race) (Class 2) (3yo+ 0-105) – Say What You See 4/1 1pt WIN
I’m willing to give Say What You See another chance after backing him at York in what I thought was an excellent effort given the position he came from.
He was ridden rank last throughout travelling strongly under Billy Garrity, still sitting pretty three out. But Say What You See couldn’t get the gap when required and by then the others had flown. He rallied strongly to be beaten a length, continuing his progressive RPR’s.
I don’t think this contest is all that stronger and visually he shaped as if this extra distance, at a track he’s won (albeit DSQ’D) at before, can see him go in again.
