CHAMPAGNE COURT NAP (12.30 Sandown, 1pt win 4/1)
Beauport is very interesting, but it’s hard to ignore the claims of CHAMPAGNE COURT who has gone a long time between drinks but bounced back to form when he returned to hurdles at Fontwell last month.
His sole other run over hurdles since 2019 was in a good class 2 race at Cheltenham over 3m – a trip he has failed to convince over the twice he has run. Prior to that, his last start over hurdles was an excellent second to Flash The Steal off of today’s handicap mark at Chepstow in 2019 in a race that has worked out remarkably well.
The winner is 16lb higher, the third is a 161-rated chaser and the fifth is rated 11lb higher. His form figures over this trip over hurdles read 22343, so he will need to take a step forward, but the reapplication of the tongue-tie is interesting, and this race lacks depth. This is also a return to the scene of his sole excellent chase win in 2019 and good hurdle third on ground quicker than ideal. All three of his career wins have come on soft ground, and he has a fitness edge over many of his main rivals.

SENDING LOVE (1.00 Sandown, 1pt win 10/1)
Minella Trump is the right favourite here, but there are question marks about this one going right-handed, given he is 0-2 going this way around and has been kept to sharp left-handed tracks for much of his career to date.
I want to take a chance on SENDING LOVE, who was impressive in his Point-to-Point that has some substance to it, and has twice won in good style over hurdles when fresh. This might be the time to catch him, and soft ground is certainly in his favour. On the balance of his form he should prove better than this mark of 131, and he is with a yard who excel with novice chasers.

DOCK ROAD (1.55 Ffos Las, 1pt win 9/1)
DOCK ROAD needs to prove that he can jump like a stag rather than a fridge on chase debut, but he is completely unexposed, and on my time figures is well handicapped off of this opening mark of 122.
His win at Exeter was full of promise given how much he did on the front end and he showed a good attitude to battle off the 125-rated Karl Philippe, who benefited from his race position. The yard waste no time over hurdles which can be viewed positively on chase debut, and he looks like one of the best-handicapped horses in the field.

LAUGHING LUIS (2.45 Sandown, 1pt win 40/1)
Undoubtedly this is a risky punt given LAUGHING LUIS has been off the track for 900 days, but the compensation is in the price, and this is a horse that was 4-7 for the powerful Nicky Henderson yard before his stable switch.
He has won fresh off a 209-day break, so there is a glimmer of promise that he could go well here. On the balance of his form, he is a well-handicapped horse. His bumper form has worked out well, as has his Newbury hurdle win in march 2019 over Dostal Phil and Antunes – both 20lb higher in the handicap.
That win for Laughing Luis came off a mark of 118, and he is only 2lbs higher here. The top of this market leaves very little room for error in terms of price, and they are simply not appealing. He could spring a surprise in this contest, and the absence of three places with the six runners mean bookies get overconfident in edging out an outsider because of the each-way terms.
