Three times Group 1 hero Rosallion is the star attraction in the list of eight potential runners for the 2024 Sussex Stakes, which takes place at Glorious Goodwood on Wednesday 31st July. A fine winner of the Irish 2000 Guineas having finished second in the British equivalent a few weeks previous, Richard Hannon’s stable star showed his class over a mile when storming to victory in the Group 1 St James’s Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot.
A neck winner over Aidan O’Brien’s Henry Longfellow in that Royal contest last month, that pairing could do battle once again as Henry Longfellow is sure to be the star attraction for the Ballydoyle team. Both top class colts, the pair are sure to be key figures in this contest that sees the three-year-olds swamp the entry list.
Charlie Appleby’s Notable Speech made it four wins from four at Newmarket when beating Rosallion by one-and-a-half lengths in the 2000 Guineas, but the Godolphin raider ran no sort of race when seventh in the St James’s Palace Stakes and he’s now on the comeback mission to try and recapture his form from Flat HQ at the start of the season.

Tue 23 Jul 2024Beaten one-and-a-half lengths by Paddington in this race 12 months ago French raider Facteur Cheval will be one of the stars for the older horses here and Jerome Reynier’s five-year-old was last seen putting up a mediocre effort when sixth in the Queen Anne Stakes at Royal Ascot, but he’s better than that effort and has to be a major player.
Another seen down the field in the Queen Anne Stakes was the William Haggas-trained Maljoom and that five-year-old is looking to build on that third placed finish, while dual Royal Hunt Cup winner Sonny Liston could try his hand in Group 1 company and is another entered for the race.
River Tiber could be the second shot fired by the Aidan O’Brien team, but he’s struggled to recapture his two-year-old form, while Mountain Bear will complete the O’Brien triumvirate and could well have pacemaking duties for Henry Longfellow, who will be certainly the most fancied of the Ballydoyle trio.
