Taunton Racing Tips (Tuesday 3 February)
Taunton’s seven-race card boasts a mixture of intriguing novice and handicap events, with a selection in each type of race at the track among our Lucky 15 top tips.
2.12 Taunton – Wandering Ego (1pt win – 13/8)
Grand Vendetta is interesting with the Paul Nicholls yard beginning to fire, but Wandering Ego is back in novice company after a decent effort in a class 3 handicap at Kempton and should take some beating. Olly Murphy’s charge bolted in at Stratford in October to get off the mark over obstacles, then went off favourite against no less than Supreme favourite Old Park Star under a penalty at Kempton, ultimately finishing fourth. Even beyond that rival, that was a very strong race and he again shaped with credit in his aforementioned handicap start. Given he was bought from the point-to-point field, he should take this step up in trip in his stride, while he has dealt with some cut in the ground previously too.
3.15 Taunton – Imaginarium (1pt win – 6/1)
Top-weight Imaginarium is one of few for whom soft or heavy ground should be no inconvenience, whereas that cannot be said for some of his most dangerous form rivals. The flat-bred son of Make Believe did not shine on his introduction to the Murphy stable last season, but improved for going handicapping, winning at both Huntingdon and Perth on good-to-soft to go up 12lb in the weights. He was last at Sandown on his return in a very good race last month, but that was on good going, which would not have suited; given his early flat form for Ger Lyons included a maiden success on soft-to-heavy, he should be right at home for what will be a first hurdles start without any “good” in the going description.
Carlisle Racing Tips (Tuesday 3 February)
Three double-figure fields ensure Carlisle’s card looks fiercely competitive on Tuesday, as we have two tips at the north-west track.
2.35 Carlisle – Oh Clare (1pt win – 3/1)
The O’Neills’ Oh Clare has travelled notably well in both her hurdles starts this campaign, significantly stepping forward on her bumper form from last season, and could back up her victory at Lingfield in December. The selection was well-supported for both of her bumper starts last season, each at this track, completely blowing up in the second of those, but after 330 days off, she was a promising second over 2m1f here, then won well at Lingfield from the re-opposing Severana. She still looked idle and green, while also pitching on landing over the last, that day, so should have even more to offer in future, with another win on the cards here.
3.35 Carlisle – That One (1pt win – 9/1)
Although he was put in his place by Medieval Gold last time, That One is fancied to reverse that form and score for James Walton. His conqueror 65 days ago over course and distance has since switched yards and sports a first-time tongue tie here, which tempers confidence in him, whereas it was encouraging that That One ran so well after a break having not done so in the past, especially as he was so progressive with his racing last term. His form in handicaps is 122, with a novice win in between, so while he is up another 1lb to a mark of 114, he could strip fitter and improve for the slightly swifter surface too.
