Sporting eyes maybe on England’s match with DR Congo in the World Cup, but horse racing continues on Wednesday 1st July with five meetings taking place. Steve Chambers takes a look at the action at two of the tracks racing, Thirsk and Epsom, and picks out his best bets to make up the GG Lucky 15 for the day.
Thirsk Racing Tips (Wednesday 1 July 2026)
It’s a bumper eight-race card at Thirsk on Wednesday, with a 1.08pm start. Check out Steve’s best two bets across the afternoon.
3.10 Thirsk – Showtown (1pt win – 9/1)
Winless in eight starts, Kevin Ryan’s Showtown can finally break his maiden tag in the 3.10pm at Thirsk. Placed second on three occasions, he’s struggled to challenge for victory of late, but that has seen his mark drop to 70 and he can make the most of it in this competitive 6f event. He will have the burden of top weight, but he was coming with a decent run last time out at the track before finding traffic problems. Only finishing fifth that day, he’s certainly worth taking another chance on and he could be a decent value play in an intriguing event.
3.40 Thirsk – York Tower (1pt win – 15/8)
We may only have five runners heading to the mile-and-a-half start for the 3.40pm contest, but it’s a race that could see some progressive performers come out of it. Yafrah and Temple have both shown promise so far in their careers, but the one that can continue on an upward curve is York Tower for William Haggas and Tom Marquand. Not out the first four in his four starts, he found it tough last time out when finishing fourth in the Lester Piggott Handicap at Epsom in soft ground. Underfoot conditions should suit more on Wednesday and with that Epsom experience sure to bring on some improvement then he can deliver here.
Epsom Racing Tips (Wednesday 1 July 2026)
A seven-race evening meeting takes place at Epsom with a 5.20pm start. Completing the GG Lucky 15 will be two selections across the card.
6.57 Epsom – Alma Latina (1pt win – 15/8)
Two smart performances at Sandown and Salisbury, which saw her place on both outings, provided a perfect springboard for Alma Latina to win third time out. Ralph Beckett’s filly stormed to an emphatic three-length victory at Pontefract in a maiden to record her first win. Now, looking to follow that up, she will make her handicap debut in the 6.57pm at Epsom. Given a mark of 82, she will need to kick on again, but she shaped like there’s plenty more to come and she can duly notch up back-to-back wins.
8.42 Epsom – Bell Shot (1pt win – 6/1)
A winner at Chester last time out, Mission Command looks to back that up in the final race at Epsom at 8.42pm. However, a 5lbs rise could well hinder his chances of landing the prize for Jennie Candlish. Bell Shot is one that could down that rival, as Mick Appleby’s charge looks attractively handicapped. A winner off a mark of 84 earlier in his career, he will feature here off 83, so if he can recapture his best form then has to be considered. Likely to be on the pace here, he could just find himself getting away on the front end and he will be very tough to reel in.
