13:40 – Hartshead Dos Champions Restricted Maiden Stakes (Bands C And D) (GBB Race) (Div I)

Race Details: 7f | Class 5 | Going: 7.0) (Good to soft, good in places (goingstick) | | flat

This looks a fairly ordinary restricted maiden on paper, but there is at least one standout profile in the field. Eagle Bay sets the standard comfortably on ratings after shaping with plenty of promise when third on debut, and this does not look a deep race if he builds on that. Ma Leila is the obvious danger on bare ability after showing fair form as a juvenile, while Circle Of Trust has more experience than most and could easily bounce back in calmer waters. Kyrenia and Soda have each shown enough to suggest they can be competitive without looking bombproof. The older pair, Rake Lane and Revolutionelle, make limited appeal against 3yos with scope, so this feels less a strong maiden and more a race likely decided by who improves most from what we’ve already seen.

Top Selections

1. Eagle Bay – 1/1 with Paddy Power

Jockey: Paul Mulrennan | Trainer: Harriet Bethell | Form: 3- | Rating: 72 | Topspeed: 48

He is the percentage call. That debut third already reads well in the context of this race, and a mark of 72 gives him a clear edge on the figures. The Topspeed of 48 is also notably stronger than anything else on offer here, which matters in a race where several have shown only modest maiden form. Paul Mulrennan is a positive booking for a yard that can place one sensibly, and this 7f on easy enough ground should suit. At even money he is no giveaway, but he looks the runner with the least guesswork attached and the one they all have to beat. Bet: WIN

Bet: WIN

2. Kyrenia – 8/1 with Bet365

Jockey: Rhys Elliott | Trainer: David & Nicola Barron | Form: 3 | Rating: 60 | Topspeed: 30

For an each-way play, Kyrenia makes more appeal than some of the more exposed alternatives. A debut third is a solid starting point in this company, and there should be more to come from that initial experience, especially for a yard that does well with this type at northern tracks. Stall 1 could help if Rhys Elliott can hold a handy position, and the bare rating of 60 does not tell the full story if natural progress kicks in second time up. At 8/1, she looks the value against rivals who have had more chances to show their level. She is not the most likely winner, but she is a perfectly sensible each-way punt. Bet: EACH-WAY

Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

Eagle Bay is the straightforward win play and looks hard to oppose if reproducing or improving on that debut third. For those playing each-way in a 10-runner race with three places on offer, Kyrenia appeals as the value alternative at 8/1. Ma Leila and Circle Of Trust are the main dangers if either takes a step forward.

14:15 – Hartshead Dos Champions Restricted Maiden Stakes (Bands C And D) (GBB Race) (Div II)

Race Details: 7f | Class 5 | Going: 7.0) (Good to soft, good in places (goingstick) | | flat

This looks a fair maiden rather than a deep one, and the market has understandably latched on to the trio with the most persuasive bits of form. Big Shot Veto sets the standard on ratings after shaping well on all three starts, while Indefensible has the best Topspeed figure in the field but didn’t really build on his reappearance second when only seventh last time. Moving Rubber is the interesting one after a perfectly respectable debut fifth and could easily take a step forward for that initial experience. Tip Foster also enters the reckoning after a solid third first time up for the Barron yard. With several lightly raced three-year-olds and one or two complete unknowns, this is not bombproof form by any means, but it does look likely to be decided by who improves most rather than who has already shown their full hand.

Top Selections

1. Big Shot Veto – 5/2 with Bet365

Jockey: James Sullivan | Trainer: Lemos De Souza | Form: 36-3 | Rating: 79 | Topspeed: 62

He brings the strongest profile into the race and, crucially, he returned from a break with another placed effort rather than going backwards. That form line of 36-3 reads well enough in a race of this nature, and his mark of 79 puts him clear at the head of the figures. There is always a slight concern with a maiden who has had a few chances, but this is not an especially intimidating contest and he should be well suited by 7f on easy ground. James Sullivan is a solid booking and, at 5/2, he looks the percentage call rather than an exciting one. Bet type: WIN

Bet: WIN

2. Moving Rubber – 3/1 with Bet365

Jockey: P J McDonald | Trainer: Geoff Oldroyd | Form: 5 | Rating: 62 | Topspeed: 54

For an each-way play, I’d rather side with the unexposed runner than one who may already have shown most of his level. Moving Rubber was beaten into fifth on debut, but that bare finishing position doesn’t tell the whole story; the effort was perfectly encouraging for a newcomer and the Topspeed figure of 54 gives him something to build on. Natural improvement from first to second start is the obvious angle, and P J McDonald is the kind of rider you want aboard in a race where tactical know-how could matter. At 3/1 he is no secret, but he still makes appeal as the one most likely to crash the favourite’s party. Bet type: EACH-WAY

Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

Big Shot Veto is the sensible win bet because he has the clearest form and the best rating in the field. Moving Rubber is the each-way option on the likelihood of normal improvement from debut. Indefensible is the obvious danger if bouncing back from a lesser run, while Tip Foster also has enough early promise to get involved if taking a step forward.

14:50 – Power Plastics “Big Day Out” Handicap

Race Details: 5f | Class 6 | Going: 7.0) (Good to soft, good in places (goingstick) | | flat

This is the sort of low-grade sprint that can make fools of the market, with plenty arriving here in fair nick but not many you would call rock-solid. Keep The Gold looks the obvious starting point after a solid comeback second and he has the draw to get involved early, while Irish Dancer comes here off a win and is clearly thriving. Miss Rainbow is another with recent placed form, and Beerwah has already shown this spring that he can be very competitive in this grade. The problem is that several of these are in and out, and over 5f at Thirsk small margins matter. It looks a tricky puzzle rather than a strong race, and value may lie just behind the head of the betting.

Top Selections

1. Keep The Gold – 4/1 with Bet365

Jockey: Connor Beasley | Trainer: Michael Dods | Form: /732-2 | Rating: 73 | Topspeed: 58

He makes plenty of appeal in a race where not many arrive with his combination of recent form and a workable setup. That latest second on his return suggested he is ready to strike, and an opening mark of 73 does not look beyond him in this company. Michael Dods knows exactly how to place these sprinters at this level, and Connor Beasley is the sort you want on side in a busy 5f handicap. He does not have masses in hand on the figures, but he looks more reliable than most of these and 4/1 feels fair rather than cramped. Bet: WIN

Bet: WIN

2. Beerwah – 15/2 with Bet365

Jockey: Kevin Stott | Trainer: John & Sean Quinn | Form: 46-217 | Rating: 69 | Topspeed: 59

Beerwah is worth another chance at a much more tempting price than the principals. He got his head in front two starts ago before running below that level last time, but that does not entirely sour me on him because his earlier spring efforts were perfectly respectable for this grade. A mark of 69 leaves him in the mix, and Kevin Stott is a positive booking for a horse who should be able to travel into this from stall 5. In a race full of exposed sprinters, 15/2 looks the sort of each-way quote that could pay dividends if he bounces back even a little. Bet: EACH-WAY

Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

Keep The Gold is the win play after that encouraging reappearance second and looks the percentage call in a messy race. Beerwah appeals as the each-way alternative at 15/2 in a 12-runner field with four places on offer. Irish Dancer and Miss Rainbow are obvious dangers, while Without Flaw is another who would not be a surprise from the inside draw.

15:30 – Moody Construction Handicap

Race Details: 6f | Class 6 | Going: 7.0) (Good to soft, good in places (goingstick) | | flat

This is a proper low-grade sprint handicap, and that usually means keeping things simple and siding with the runners arriving in form rather than those living on old ratings. Taygar has been knocking loudly on the door and gets a handy low draw, while Sherlock has been running well enough in similar company to figure prominently again. Imperial Guard is interesting on old figures and has the best Topspeed number in the field, but he does need to leave a couple of underwhelming efforts behind. Fan Mail is another with claims if building on his latest second, while Elvetham is one of the few who comes here with genuine momentum. It is not a deep race, but it is a tricky one, with small margins likely to decide it.

Top Selections

1. Taygar – 7/2 with Bet365

Jockey: Paul Mulrennan | Trainer: Michael Dods | Form: 08-822 | Rating: 74 | Topspeed: 65

Taygar makes plenty of appeal in a race where recent consistency counts for a lot. Those last three runs, reading 8-2-2, suggest he is ready to strike, and stall 1 could be a real asset over this sharp 6f if Mulrennan can hold a handy position early. Michael Dods also runs Imperial Guard, but this one looks the more solid option right now. Off the same mark of 74, he does not need to improve much to win a race of this nature, and at 7/2 he looks fairly priced rather than cramped. In a contest full of ifs and buts, he is the one with the fewest questions to answer. Bet: WIN

2. Elvetham – 15/2 with Bet365

Jockey: Jack Gilligan | Trainer: Conrad Allen | Form: 177133 | Rating: 74 | Topspeed: 69

Elvetham is easy to make a case for as the each-way play because he is one of the very few in here who is still running like a horse in form. His recent figures of 1-3-3 show he has been holding his level well, and a mark of 74 looks workable if he can transfer that consistency into this slightly different setting. The wide draw in 10 is not ideal, but in a race lacking depth I would rather trust a runner arriving in nick than a better-fancied one with patchier recent work. The 15/2 on offer makes him the value angle, especially with three places available in an 11-runner field. Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

Taygar is the percentage call for a straight win bet given his recent seconds and favourable low draw. For those looking to play a bit safer, Elvetham makes plenty of sense each-way at the prices because he is running consistently well. The obvious dangers are Sherlock, who keeps threatening to get his head back in front, and Imperial Guard if the return to this grade sparks him up.

16:10 – Ruby Lodge Care Home In Thirsk Handicap

Race Details: 1m 4f | Class 5 | Going: 7.0) (Good to soft, good in places (goingstick) | | flat

This is a small-field 3yo handicap but it’s not quite the penalty kick the market suggests. King Of Berkshire is the obvious one after a solid sequence and he sets the standard on an opening mark that still looks workable, but he’s short enough in a race where a couple of rivals arrive with something to recommend them. Forever Perfect has been admirably consistent and should be well suited by this sort of test, while Myrrh has bits of form that give him a squeak if seeing out the trip strongly. Rumbustious is another who keeps knocking on the door without quite getting his head in front. It’s not a deep contest, but there are enough progressive profiles here to make it a mildly tricky little puzzle rather than a simple odds-on procession.

Top Selections

1. King Of Berkshire – 5/6 with Betfair

Jockey: P J McDonald | Trainer: Andrew Balding | Form: 7-4213 | Rating: 83 | Topspeed: 76

King Of Berkshire is hard to oppose on what he has shown this spring. He got off the mark before backing that up with a respectable third, and his profile suggests this step up to 1m4f can bring a bit more again rather than find him out. Balding’s 3yos in handicaps are rarely thrown in blind, and an opening rating in the low 80s still looks fair judged on the way he has been shaping. P J McDonald is a positive booking in a tactical six-runner race, too. At 5/6 he is no giveaway, but he is the one with the clearest progression and the strongest claims. Bet: WIN

Bet: WIN

2. Forever Perfect – 9/2 with Bet365

Jockey: Kaiya Fraser | Trainer: Rebecca Menzies | Form: -63122 | Rating: 82 | Topspeed:

Forever Perfect makes plenty of each-way appeal in a race lacking depth beyond the front two or three in the market. She has done little wrong in recent starts, winning before posting back-to-back seconds, and that consistency counts for plenty around Thirsk where position and attitude matter. Off 122 she gets weight from the favourite despite being only 1lb lower on official figures, which is a fair little angle in her favour. Kaiya Fraser knows how to get one into a rhythm and this filly looks the type to keep finding. Available at 9/2, she looks the value alternative if the favourite underperforms or the race gets tactical. Bet: EACH-WAY

Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

King Of Berkshire is the sensible win play and the one most likely to justify market confidence. For an each-way punt, Forever Perfect stands out as the percentage call in a six-runner race with two places on offer. Myrrh and Rumbustious are the obvious dangers if one of the principals fails to fire, but both need to find a bit more than they have shown lately.

16:45 – David Ritchie Is 50! Happy Birthday! Fillies’ Handicap

Race Details: 5f | Class 5 | Going: 7.0) (Good to soft, good in places (goingstick) | | flat

This is a proper Thirsk sprint handicap: plenty with chances, not many you could call bombproof, and the draw could matter if one side gets rolling early. The three-year-olds look to have a slight edge, with Dragon Spin, Fille Unique and Data Fata Secutus all arriving with workable profiles, while Military Girl comes here in form after getting her head back in front. J Street is another with obvious claims from stall 1, especially if the inside is the place to be, but she has become a touch expensive to follow. In truth, this is more trappy than strong, and I’d rather side with the fillies who still look on the upgrade rather than the exposed older handicappers trying to recycle old marks.

Top Selections

1. Dragon Spin – 4/1 with Bet365

Jockey: Dougie Costello | Trainer: Steph Hollinshead | Form: 422-31 | Rating: 72 | Topspeed: 60

Dragon Spin makes plenty of appeal. She has been knocking on the door for a while and finally got the job done last time, which often matters with these sprint handicappers because confidence can count for plenty once they learn how to finish a race off. She is only 3lb higher here, still lightly raced compared to several of these, and stall 4 looks a handy spot to attack from over the minimum trip. Costello is the sort you want in a race like this too: uncomplicated and positive. At 4/1, she is not a giveaway, but she is solid and still looks a progressive sort in a race short on certainty. Bet: WIN

Bet: WIN

2. Data Fata Secutus – 9/1 with Bet365

Jockey: Kaiya Fraser | Trainer: Rebecca Menzies | Form: -52737 | Rating: 76 | Topspeed: 59

Data Fata Secutus is the each-way angle at a fairer price. She has not quite put it all together in her last couple of starts, but there was enough in that earlier second and third this season to think she can be competitive in a race of this nature. What catches the eye here is the weight: just 123, and that can be a major asset in a 5f handicap on good to soft where a few of these may feel the pinch late on. She is not as obviously progressive as Dragon Spin, but she is well treated enough to hit the frame and perhaps better if the race falls apart in front of her. At 9/1, she looks the value each-way punt. Bet: EACH-WAY

Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

Dragon Spin is the straightforward win play given her recent success and the sense she is still going forward. For an each-way alternative in a 12-runner race with four places on offer, Data Fata Secutus makes plenty of appeal off a low weight. The obvious dangers are Military Girl, who arrives in winning form, and J Street, who has the draw and profile to be involved again.

17:20 – Next Meeting Tuesday 16th June Featuring Royal Ascot Handicap

Race Details: 6f | Class 5 | Going: 7.0) (Good to soft, good in places (goingstick) | | flat

This is a proper end-of-card three-year-old sprint handicap: competitive, a little messy, and not one to treat as a certainty. Plenty arrive with bits of form that make them interesting without any of them screaming bombproof. Brave Traveller sets the standard on official figures and comes here after a better effort when runner-up, while Showtown and Napolian have the profiles of horses capable of winning a race like this if things drop right. Empress Olivia is another with a recent success to her name, but she needs forgiving for a poor latest run. With 13 runners over 6f on ground riding good to soft, track position, pace and who handles the surface best could easily decide it. Tricky puzzle, but not impossible.

Top Selections

1. Brave Traveller – 9/2 with Bet365

Jockey: Paul Mulrennan | Trainer: Bryan Smart | Form: 21-592 | Rating: 81 | Topspeed: 44

He looks the percentage call in a race where plenty have questions attached. Brave Traveller is the highest-rated horse in the line-up and, crucially, shaped much better last time when second after a couple of less convincing efforts earlier in the spring. That suggests he is coming to the boil rather than going the wrong way. Stall 13 is not ideal, but over 6f at Thirsk it is not automatically fatal if Mulrennan can get him organised early. At 9/2 he is not a giveaway, but he does bring the most solid recent piece of form among the principals and holds strong claims if building on that latest run. Bet: WIN

Bet: WIN

2. Napolian – 7/1 with Bet365

Jockey: Oisin Orr | Trainer: David O’Meara | Form: 2334- | Rating: 75 | Topspeed: 59

Napolian appeals as the each-way play because his profile is that of a horse who has been knocking on the door and could easily be well treated now handicapping as a three-year-old. Those juvenile efforts were admirably consistent without quite getting his head in front, and David O’Meara’s runners in these northern sprint handicaps always demand respect. Drawn in 4, he should have the chance to get a handy tow into the race, and Oisin Orr is the right man for that sort of ride. The topspeed figure is not flashy, but at 7/1 in a 13-runner contest with four places on offer, he makes plenty of each-way appeal if returning in the same vein as last season. Bet: EACH-WAY

Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

Brave Traveller is the win play on the back of his latest second and his ability to cope from this mark. Napolian is the each-way punt at a fair price, with his draw and solid juvenile form making him interesting for a place at the very least. Showtown is the obvious danger, while Empress Olivia is one to note if bouncing back from that last run.
