13:08 – British EBF Restricted Novice Stakes (Bands C & D) (EBF Qualifier) (GBB/IRE Incentive Race) (Div I)

Race Details: 6f | Class 5 | Going: 7.9) (watered) (Good to firm, good in places (goingstick) | | flat

This looks a fairly ordinary restricted novice on paper, but there are a couple with solid enough credentials at the head of the market. Kodiak Breeze sets the standard after already getting off the mark and his figures make him the obvious one to beat, while Possessive brings the strongest stable profile and shouldn’t be judged too harshly on that latest seventh after winning on debut. Behind the front pair, Location Location appeals as the one who could nick a place again if improving for experience, though this is the sort of race where an unexposed newcomer could easily step forward. In truth, it’s not the deepest 2yo contest you’ll see at Thirsk, and that should make proven form count for plenty over this sharp 6f.

Top Selections

1. Kodiak Breeze – 11/10 with Bet365

Jockey: Shane Gray | Trainer: Kevin Ryan | Form: 21 | Rating: 82 | Topspeed: 67

Kodiak Breeze has the most persuasive profile in the field. He improved from his debut second to win next time, and that 82 rating alongside a topspeed of 67 gives him the best body of form on offer. Kevin Ryan’s juveniles are always worth respecting in these northern novice events, and the fact this colt has already shown he can learn and progress is a big plus in a race where so many are still guessing. Drawn in 5, he should get a fair tow into things, and at around 11/10 he isn’t exactly a giveaway, but he does look the one they all have to beat. Bet: WIN

Bet: WIN

2. Location Location – 7/1 with Bet365

Jockey: Kaiya Fraser | Trainer: James Fanshawe | Form: 53 | Rating: 70 | Topspeed: 43

If you want something at a more workable price, Location Location makes some each-way appeal. He has shown ability in both starts, improving from fifth to third, and that’s often the right sort of pattern in a race of this nature. James Fanshawe isn’t a trainer to rush his youngsters, so the steady progress is encouraging rather than flashy. He doesn’t have the raw figures of the two market leaders, but he’s drawn low in 3 and looks the type who could keep on finding under pressure if this turns into a proper test at the trip. Available at 7/1, he looks the value alternative for an each-way punt.

Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

Kodiak Breeze is the straight win play, as he brings the best established form and the strongest speed figure. For those looking beyond the favourite, Location Location is the sensible each-way option at a fairer price. Possessive is the obvious danger if bouncing back from his latest run, but the market probably has the front two right.

Race Details: 6f | Class 5 | Going: 7.9) (watered) (Good to firm, good in places (goingstick) | | flat

This does rather revolve around Arapaho Gold, who made a winning start and brings a clear edge on the figures into an ordinary enough restricted novice. He sets the standard on a mark of 84 and, unless one of the newcomers is much sharper than the market expects, he is going to take plenty of stopping. The opposition is not entirely hopeless, mind. Travellers Girl shaped with promise when fourth on debut and looks the obvious one to improve, while Brixworth Bandit has at least shown a bit in both starts. There are several unknowns, including Harry Who and That’s All Right, but on what we have seen so far this is not a deep race and the favourite deserves to be so short.

Top Selections

1. Arapaho Gold – 4/11 with William Hill

Jockey: Connor Beasley | Trainer: Michael Dods | Form: 1 | Rating: 84 | Topspeed: 62

There is no getting away from it: Arapaho Gold is the one they all have to beat. A debut winner with an 84 rating already in the book, he has achieved markedly more than anything else in this field and did it in the style of a colt who should cope perfectly well with another sharp 6f on quick ground. Michael Dods and Connor Beasley are a very solid northern combination in these juvenile sprints, and the market has him exactly where you would expect at 4/11. It is not a sexy price, but in a race lacking depth he simply holds the strongest claims by some margin. Bet: WIN

Bet: WIN

2. Travellers Girl – 8/1 with Bet365

Jockey: Oisin McSweeney | Trainer: Roger Fell | Form: 4 | Rating: 76 | Topspeed: 52

If you are looking beyond the obvious, Travellers Girl makes most appeal as the each-way play. She was fourth on debut, which does not leap off the page, but that initial effort still puts her among the more credible alternatives in a race where plenty either need to improve a chunk or are complete unknowns. A mark of 76 gives her a fair platform, and juveniles from this yard can step forward nicely from first to second start. At 8/1, she looks the value against rivals like Brixworth Bandit and Harry Who for the minor honours, and she would not need to find much to hit the frame. Bet: EACH-WAY

Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

Arapaho Gold is the straightforward win play and, while the price is skinny, he looks the most likely winner by a fair way. For an each-way angle in a big enough field, Travellers Girl makes more sense than taking short enough prices about lesser exposed types. The main dangers are probably Harry Who if ready first time and Brixworth Bandit, who has at least shown some racecourse experience.

14:08 – British EBF Novice Stakes (GBB Race)

Race Details: 7f | Class 4 | Going: 7.9) (watered) (Good to firm, good in places (goingstick) | | flat

This looks a useful novice rather than a weak midsummer puzzle, with several solid pieces of placed form on offer and at least one interesting newcomer in Woheela. Lord D’Or sets the standard on ratings after stepping forward from his debut to finish second, while Fozzie and North Force bring the sort of exposed but reliable juvenile-and-three-year-old novice form that makes them dangerous. Steel Raven shaped nicely when third on debut and is entitled to improve again, and Prince Of Calypso has also shown enough to suggest he can be involved. The older outsiders, headed by Moral Victory and Fair Isle Sioux, look badly up against it. In truth, the race may come down to whether the unexposed types can find more than the established placed horses.

Top Selections

1. Lord D’Or

Jockey: P J McDonald | Trainer: Andrew Balding | Form: 6-2 | Rating: 86 | Topspeed: 33

Lord D’Or appeals as the most likely winner on what he has achieved so far. He took a clear step forward from a fair debut sixth to finish second next time, and that 86 rating gives him the best figure in the line-up. Balding’s three-year-olds in these novice events are rarely here to make up the numbers, and the fact he has already shown he can handle the job gives him an edge over some less streetwise rivals. The topspeed figure is not flashy, but this is more about potential and professionalism over 7f. In a race with depth, he still sets the form standard and looks hard to oppose. Bet: WIN

Bet: WIN

2. Woheela – 6/1 with Bet365

Jockey: Tom Marquand | Trainer: Ed Walker | Form: | Rating: | Topspeed:

Woheela is the interesting each-way angle because she is the one runner open to any amount of improvement and she comes from a yard well capable of readying one first time. Tom Marquand is an eye-catching booking at Thirsk and the market has already shown a fair bit of respect, with 6/1 available at the time of writing. In a race where some of the principals have had their chances in novice company, a well-bred debutante with a top rider can be the one to upset the established pecking order. You are taking fitness and experience on trust, obviously, but she looks the value against better-known quantities. Bet: EACH-WAY

Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

Keep it fairly simple: Lord D’Or is the win play because he brings the strongest achieved form and the highest rating into the race. For an each-way punt, Woheela makes more appeal than the exposed placed horses at around 6/1. The main dangers are Steel Raven, who should improve from his debut third, and Fozzie, whose consistency gives him obvious place claims.

14:40 – Army Benevolent Fund Handicap

Race Details: 6f | Class 6 | Going: 7.9) (watered) (Good to firm, good in places (goingstick) | | flat

This is a proper Thirsk sprint handicap puzzle: 19 runners, plenty with bits of form, and not many you could call bombproof. Mister Sky Blue arrives on the back of a couple of solid runner-up efforts and is the obvious one to start with, while Barmyblade also comes here after shaping well and has the profile of a yard runner who could easily go one better in this grade. Uncle Sam has a big Topspeed figure for the level and looks dangerous if building on his recent second, while Ellie’s De Vega is knocking loudly on the door for the 3yo brigade. In a race where plenty are exposed and several are unreliable, recent sharp 6f form and the ability to travel in a big field should count for plenty. Tricky, yes, but not impossible.

Top Selections

1. Mister Sky Blue – 11/2 with Bet365

Jockey: Connor Beasley | Trainer: Gemma Tutty | Form: 49-272 | Rating: 68 | Topspeed: 59

He looks the percentage call. Those last two seconds suggest he is ready to strike, and while a mark of 68 asks a question in a busy Class 6, he is at least arriving here in form rather than living on old memories. Drawn 7, he should have every chance of getting a sensible tow into the race, and Connor Beasley is the sort you want in these rough-and-tumble sprints. There are lurkers lower in the weights, but Mister Sky Blue has the strongest recent profile among the principals and 11/2 is fair enough in a race full of dodgy characters. Bet: WIN

Bet: WIN

2. Uncle Sam – 10/1 with Bet365

Jockey: Tom Eaves | Trainer: Ray Craggs | Form: 6820-2 | Rating: 63 | Topspeed: 68

He makes plenty of each-way appeal at the prices. That recent second on his return was encouraging enough on its own, but the standout number is the 68 Topspeed figure, which is a serious one for a race of this nature. Off just 63, he is clearly handicapped to be competitive if reproducing it, and stall 10 gives Tom Eaves options rather than boxing him into one plan. He is not the most consistent horse in the line-up, which is why he is a double-figure price, but this looks the right grade and the frame is very much within reach. At 10/1, he is the value each-way punt.

Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

Mister Sky Blue is the win play because he brings the cleanest recent form into an ordinary Class 6 sprint and looks hard to oppose if running to the same level again. Uncle Sam is the each-way alternative with five places on offer, as his return to form and big Topspeed figure make him overpriced. Barmyblade and Ellie’s De Vega look the main dangers.

15:10 – David Lever Memorial Handicap

Race Details: 6f | Class 5 | Going: 7.9) (watered) (Good to firm, good in places (goingstick) | | flat

This looks a proper three-year-old sprint handicap rather than a weak summer seller in disguise, and there are several with perfectly solid claims. Go Lockers Go brings the most persuasive recent profile after a pair of wins and two seconds, while Hares Bredth arrives on the back of a success and still looks feasibly treated despite a 5lb rise. Concert has a handy low draw and shaped well last time, Liverpool Star has been knocking on the door in similar company, and unexposed types like Celtic Arrow could easily step forward again. In other words, it is competitive without being impenetrable. Over this sharp 6f, track position and how the race develops early will matter plenty, but the percentage call is to side with the progressive runners rather than the exposed ones.

Top Selections

1. Go Lockers Go – 4/1 with Bet365

Jockey: Daniel Tudhope | Trainer: Michael Bell | Form: 4-1122 | Rating: 73 | Topspeed: 66

He is the obvious one, but not a lazy pick. That recent sequence of 1-1-2-2 tells its own story: he is thriving, he is holding his form, and he has already shown he can cope with handicaps. An opening mark in the low 70s looked workable and there is no sign the assessor has got on top of him yet. Drawn in 2, Daniel Tudhope should be able to bag a sensible position early, which counts for plenty at Thirsk over this trip. At 4/1 he is not being missed, but this is a race where the most progressive profile may simply win. Bet: WIN

2. Hares Bredth – 15/2 with Bet365

Jockey: Sean Kirrane | Trainer: Tim Easterby | Form: 5-4371 | Rating: 78 | Topspeed: 56

Hares Bredth appeals as the each-way play because he is coming here in form, gets in with just 123lb, and represents a yard that knows exactly what is required in these northern sprint handicaps. The latest win was no fluke given he had been edging towards it on his previous starts, and although a 5lb rise asks a question, he still looks on a fair mark for a race of this depth. From stall 7 he should have options rather than excuses, and 15/2 is a perfectly fair each-way price with four places on offer. He may not have the upside of the favourite, but he has solid place credentials. Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

Keep it simple: Go Lockers Go is the win play because his profile is the cleanest and he still looks ahead of the handicapper. Hares Bredth makes more appeal as the each-way alternative, especially with four places available and a light weight in his favour. Concert and Liverpool Star look the main dangers if the race falls their way.

15:40 – Weatherbys Racing Bank Handicap (GBBPlus Race)

Race Details: 1m 4f | Class 4 | Going: 7.9) (watered) (Good to firm, good in places (goingstick) | | flat

This five-runner 3yo handicap looks small in numbers but not especially straightforward, with four of the five arriving with fairly similar ratings and varying degrees of untapped stamina. York Tower heads the market for William Haggas and is the obvious one after shaping with promise in stronger company, while Temple also brings solid handicap credentials and a workable weight. Asia Force has done little wrong in four starts and should be suited by a race lacking depth, and Yafreh is another who has been knocking on the door without quite getting his head in front. Parisian Scholar needs to bounce back from a lesser effort. It is not a deep race for the grade, but it is the kind where tactical pace and who sees out the trip best could decide everything.

Top Selections

1. York Tower – 13/8 with Bet365

Jockey: Tom Marquand | Trainer: William Haggas | Form: 22-34 | Rating: 87 | Topspeed: 59

York Tower makes the most appeal in a race where there are angles for several, but not many excuses left for some of the others. He has been running consistently well, his form figures of 22-34 suggesting a colt who is holding his level and still has scope at this sort of trip. Haggas does well with these improving middle-distance types and Tom Marquand is exactly the rider you want in a tactical five-runner affair. Off 87, he does not look overburdened by the handicapper, and at 13/8 he is short enough but still the percentage call against rivals who have a bit more to prove. Bet: WIN

Betting Strategy

Keep it simple in this small field: York Tower is the win bet and the one I would want on side. With only five runners, there is no each-way angle worth forcing. Temple is the obvious danger if he improves again, while Asia Force is solid enough to nick a place if the race turns into a crawl.

16:10 – Weatherbys Global Stallions App Handicap

Race Details: 6f | Class 3 | Going: 7.9) (watered) (Good to firm, good in places (goingstick) | | flat

This is a proper sprint handicap rather than a throwaway late-card heat, and the defection of Deep Havana tightens things up without making life much easier. Novello Lad arrives seeking a hat-trick and is the obvious progressive one, while Indian Run comes here after a solid runner-up effort and has the profile of one ready to strike from a handy mark. Juan Les Pins keeps running his race in this grade and Mister Sox is dangerously well treated if building on his latest third. Strong Warrior also shaped better than the bare result last time and isn’t out of it. In short, there are several with plausible cases, but the race may well be decided by who gets the cleanest run and who can best exploit a fairly sharp 6f on quick ground.

Top Selections

1. Indian Run – 3/1 with Bet365

Jockey: Ryan Sexton | Trainer: Julie Camacho | Form: 07-892 | Rating: 96 | Topspeed: 82

Indian Run looks the most solid option in a race where a few have questions to answer. He has been edging back to form this season and that latest second suggested he is ready to cash in, especially now returned to a stiff enough 6f on fast ground. An official mark of 96 asks for a proper effort, but he has run well from this sort of level before and Ryan Sexton knows how to ride him patiently off a strong pace. At 3/1 he is no giveaway, but he still makes plenty of appeal because he brings the fewest doubts into the race and holds strong claims if getting the gaps at the right time. Bet: WIN

Bet: WIN

2. Juan Les Pins – 13/2 with Paddy Power

Jockey: Harry Davies | Trainer: Michael Appleby | Form: 212132 | Rating: 93 | Topspeed: 87

You know exactly what you are getting with Juan Les Pins, and in big-field sprint handicaps that reliability counts for plenty. The veteran has been knocking on the door with form figures that demand respect, and racing from 93 with just 131lb on his back gives him a fair chance of being competitive again. He is not especially well hidden from the handicapper, but he travels kindly, has the tactical pace for 6f and usually runs his race whichever way the contest develops. Harry Davies is a positive booking and the 13/2 on offer makes him the standout each-way play against rivals who may be better treated on paper but are far less trustworthy in practice. Bet: EACH-WAY

Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

Indian Run is the win play because he looks primed to strike and has the strongest recent piece of form among the principals. For an each-way punt, Juan Les Pins makes plenty of sense given his consistency and workable weight. Novello Lad is the obvious danger if the hat-trick bid keeps rolling, while Mister Sox is another to note if the market speaks in his favour.

16:40 – William Hill Summer Cup Saturday 1st August Book Now Handicap

Race Details: 7f | Class 5 | Going: 7.9) (watered) (Good to firm, good in places (goingstick) | | flat

This is a proper end-of-card handicap with plenty in with a squeak and not much room for lazy thinking. Al Muqdad heads the market after a solid recent second and he’s an obvious player despite giving weight away, while Tattie Bogle arrives in winning form and still looks on the upgrade for Charlie Johnston. In A Hurry is another from the O’Meara yard with claims after shaping better last time, and Vince Le Prince has the profile of one who keeps knocking on the door in this grade. Lower down, Rory’s Gold and Avatar Jet are not without each-way interest in a 14-runner field where pace, position and a bit of luck in running will matter. Tricky? Absolutely. But not impossible to solve.

Top Selections

1. Tattie Bogle – 7/1 with Betfair

Jockey: Jason Hart | Trainer: Charlie Johnston | Form: 182321 | Rating: 83 | Topspeed: 72

He makes plenty of appeal in a race where a few are exposed and he still looks like a progressive 4yo. That recent win was no accident, and the broader form string of 182321 tells you he has been holding his level really well while learning how to get the job done. An opening mark of 83 in this company does not look punitive, especially with Jason Hart booked for a yard that does well with hardy, improving handicappers. From stall 10 he should have options, and at 7/1 he looks a fair bit more than just a token chance. He’s the one I want on side.

Bet: WIN

2. Rory’s Gold

Jockey: Amie Waugh | Trainer: Simon Waugh | Form: 94-682 | Rating: 78 | Topspeed: 74

For an each-way play, Rory’s Gold is interesting at the foot of the weights after a much more encouraging second last time. He is not bombproof, but that latest effort suggested he is coming to hand and his Topspeed figure of 74 stacks up well enough in this grade. Off 78, carrying just 126, he doesn’t need to improve dramatically to get involved if building on that run, and stall 7 looks perfectly workable in a race where the draw should not be decisive on its own. He is the type who could easily outrun market expectations and sneak into the frame, with more if things break right.

Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

Tattie Bogle is the win play because he arrives with momentum and still has the look of a horse ahead of his mark. Rory’s Gold is the each-way punt in a race that should reward a solid handicapper carrying less weight. The obvious dangers are Al Muqdad, who brings strong recent form, and Vince Le Prince, who is too consistent to dismiss.
