Nicky Henderson’s Jonbon is the star attraction amongst eight horses entered for Saturday’s Tingle Creek Chase, which is the feature race on a superb card at Sandown Park. A fine winner of the race 12 months ago, the JP McManus-owned multiple Grade 1 winner will look to build on a recent win in the Shloer Chase at Cheltenham and make it two wins from two this season.
A top class two-mile chaser and the premier performer over that distance on British soil, Jonbon is looking to replicate last year’s win, where he beat Edwardstone by two-and-three-quarter lengths and that Alan King-trained rival will lock horns with him once again this weekend.
The former Arkle winner was well beaten in this event last season and he was also soundly beaten by Jonbon in the abovementioned Shloer Chase last month, where Edwardstone could only finish third. Ahead of the King raider that day was also Harry Fry’s Boothill, who ran a decent race to finish runner-up to Jonbon, but he’s another home contender that has his work cut out against the Henderson hotpot.
There’s a brace of Irish-trained runners that could take their chance and the prominent one of the pair is likely to be Henry De Bromhead’s Quilixios, who was last seen trouncing former Supreme hero Marine Nationale over the larger obstacles at Naas. Eighth in last season’s Arkle, De Bromhead’s charge will also be joined by Joseph O’Brien’s Solness, who was a neck second to Found A Fifty, which is decent form.
A taking winner of the Haldon Gold Cup at Exeter on his last start, JPR One could drop back to the minimum trip here for Joe Tizzard and is a contender open to improvement, while the pair of Master Chewy and Unexpected Party complete the possible line-up.
