6.10 Yarmouth – Racing League Race 2 Handicap

The unexposed three-year-old pair Express Train and Sensorium are interesting in this 6f handicap, but neither has raced on ground with “soft” somewhere in the description, which looks likely at Yarmouth on Thursday evening. As a result, the recent flat return of BISHOP’S CROWN catches the eye for Eve Johnson Houghton.

The five-year-old is a three-time handicap winner, all of which have come over 6f, the latest on good-to-soft going at Salisbury last season. He has also won on soft at Doncaster though and only one of his handicap victories came off a lower mark than he currently sits on heading into this contest.

The son of Havana Gold is down to a rating of 78, having won at Salisbury off 81 in September. Most of his drop down the weights came from all-weather efforts, but he prefers racing on turf, so should profit again soon. His return to grass at Windsor on Monday was promising and suggested he can win a race of this nature soon.

7.10 Yarmouth – Racing League Race 4 Handicap

Rajindri is intriguing at a big price having been second on all three seasonal debuts, but she is likely in the grip of the handicapper. Preference instead is for RACINGBREAKS RYDER, proven on softer surfaces and still very capable off this mark of 84.

Charlie Hills’ charge won over this trip on soft ground at Catterick last term having dropped to a mark of 79. He did it impressively by four lengths that day and ran respectably under a penalty just a week later at Doncaster.

His only turf start this term saw him beaten just a short head off this mark at Goodwood in June. A subsequent run on the all-weather at Kempton is easily discarded as it has him back to the same rating and as a horse who does stay 1m, this more testing track than Goodwood, under these conditions, could easily bring about a sixth career success.

7.40 Yarmouth – Racing League Race 5 Handicap

Jer Batt is lurking on a dangerous mark, but he has been slightly below his best the last twice which could open this handicap up. It may be worth taking a gamble on END OF STORY, also arriving off the back of two below par efforts, but there may be excuses.

The three-year-old joined Mark Loughnane at the start of this season, finishing sixth of ten on his debut for the yard at Sandown. He was then drawn widest of all when upped to 6f at Chester and never made an impact, but the handicapper has seen fit to drop him significantly down the weights to a mark of 87.

That is now just 1lb higher than when making all in a York nursery to conclude his juvenile campaign and that also came on his only career start on soft ground. With that surface returning here, and his other win coming on good-to-soft on debut, he is potentially well-treated if able to find a spark.

8.10 Yarmouth – Racing League Race 6 Handicap

Although this race has far from filled, it could prove the trickiest puzzle of the night. The verdict goes to PIQUE’, a filly who has untapped potential over staying trips, with 1m6f now looking her ideal distance.

She racked up a run of seconds last summer after a handicap success at Leicester last May. All of those came over 1m4f though, including at this track, but when James Fanshawe upped her to 1m6f at Nottingham, she delivered a second success, winning comfortably by 3½ lengths on heavy.

Two fairly heavy defeats began this season back over 1m4f, but she was much better again at Haydock last Friday, finishing a close third over 1m6f once more. The slower surface should play to her strengths though and she can deal with regular racing, so may be able to benefit off a mark only 3lb above her last winning one.
