Tote Placepot 2000 Guineas Special: Selections For Newmarket on Saturday 4th May 2024

It’s 2000 Guineas day at Newmarket on Saturday afternoon and City Of Troy will be a red-hot favourite for the first Classic of the season. Away from the 2000 Guineas there’s some ultra-competitive action at Flat HQ and our man Steve Chambers tries to land the Tote Placepot and he picks out his selections for the first six races.

Leg 1: 1.10pm

Leg 1 Selections: (6) Star Guest

Charlie Appleby’s STAR GUEST relished the drop back to six furlongs last season when notching up a fine double at Newmarket and the four-year-old filly will look to land the hat-trick on Saturday in the opening race of the afternoon. She will need to improve again as she steps out of the handicap sphere and goes into Listed company, but she’s going the right way and can land this contest with aplomb.

13:10 William Hill British EBF Ellen Chaloner Stakes (Listed) (The Kilvington Stakes) (Fillies & Mares)

Leg 2: 1.45pm

Leg 2 Selections: (8) Rabaah

Fifth in a hugely competitive York contest on his last start back in June, RABAAH will make his seasonal reappearance in another hot contest at Newmarket at 1:45pm. A dual winner on the all-weather for Charlie Hills, the four-year-old is open to significant improvement this term and having been dropped 1lb by the handicapper for that York run means a mark of 96 looks workable. He takes on some experienced campaigners in this contest, who could be in the handicapper’s grip, so he’s worth taking a chance on.

13:45 William Hill Extra Place Races Handicap (Heritage Handicap)

Leg 3: 2.20pm

Leg 3 Selections: (2) Torito

A taking win at Epsom in handicap company forced the John & Thady Gosden team to send TORITO to Royal Ascot and he was an excellent fourth in the Hampton Court Stakes. Not seen since that run in June, he now ventures back out of Group company and into the handicap sphere and he should prove far too good for his rivals here. The son of Kingman can use this race as a springboard back into the Group division, but he looks a good thing to kick off his campaign with a win at Newmarket.

Leg 4: 2.55pm

Leg 4 Selections: (9) Beautiful Diamond

Karl Burke’s BEAUTIFUL DIAMOND burst on to the scene when finishing third in the Queen Mary Stakes at Royal Ascot and she ended last season with a taking win in the Listed Rosebery Stakes at Ayr. She lines up in a cracking renewal of the Group 3 Palace House Stakes at Newmarket at 2:55pm and she should be able to down the likes of Twilight Calls and Mitbaahy, who look two of the main dangers in a thrilling five-furlong sprint.

14:55 William Hill Palace House Stakes (Group 3)

Leg 5: 3.35pm

Leg 5 Selections: (2) City Of Troy

Aidan O’Brien’s CITY OF TROY is a red-hot odds-on favourite for the QIPCO 2000 Guineas and the Ballydoyle hotpot can cement his name as one of the stars of the turf by storming to victory in the first Classic of the season. Unbeaten in all three starts as a two-year-old, City Of Troy was a magnificent winner of the Dewhurst Stakes on his last start at Newmarket and if he can repeat that effort then he should be far too classy for his rivals here.

15:35 Qipco 2000 Guineas Stakes (Group 1) (No Geldings) (British Champions Series)

Leg 6: 4.10pm

Leg 6 Selections: (2) Real Dream

Well fancied for the Ebor Handicap at York at the end of last season, REAL DREAM disappointed when finishing 19th, but he bounced back with a decent third place finish in the Mallard Handicap at Doncaster on his last start. Sir Michael Stoute’s raider was given a 2lbs rise by the handicapper for that run on Town Moor, which isn’t ideal, but he’s still lightly-raced and has the potential to deal with a mark of 101 in the last leg of the Placepot.

16:10 William Hill Epic Boost Handicap
