The Placepot on Saturday can be played across a number of courses. We look to Newmarket’s July Course, which features two races on ITV, to try and land the prize with our across-the-card selections.

Leg 1: 2.05pm
Leg 1 Selections: (5) Griselda
This is quite a step up in class for George Scott’s GRISELDA, but the yard are in flying form and their filly is one of those to benefit from that. After not showing up in three maiden and novice starts, she has won all three nurseries, scraping home at Pontefract before markedly improving the last twice. Her victories at Lingfield and Thirsk have been secured by wide margins, and though she is up a stone here, she may still take some beating.
Leg 2: 2.40pm
Leg 2 Selections: (3) Divina Grace
This is not a great Listed race, with Lmay setting a below par standard for this level at the top of the market. One to oppose her at a price and who could well run into a place is DIVINA GRACE, who barely ever runs a bad race. She was third in this class at Pontefract in June and did not have everything go her way over course and distance two weeks ago. In a weaker contest, she can put her stamina to good use and make the frame.
Leg 3: 3.15pm
Leg 3 Selections: (1) Desert Flower
No prizes for originality here, but with only two places on offer and the unraced fillies not making enough appeal over one another, likely odds-on favourite DESERT FLOWER is the safe pick. She will obviously carry a penalty and may not be able to get away with running green again, as she did on debut, but she still got the job done in impressive fashion that day, and it came over course and distance. She should take a lot of beating.

Leg 4: 3.50pm
Leg 4 Selections: (1) Cracking Gold
This step back in distance looks a good move for top weight CRACKING GOLD, who made a great start to this season without quite kicking on since. He was an unlucky loser on his handicap debut on Kempton’s all-weather and has raced in two strong handicaps at Sandown and Royal Ascot over 1m since. He was actually third of ten in his group when down the field in the Britannia Stakes and is 2lb lower here back to 7f. Those factors combine for his appeal.
Leg 5: 4.25pm
Leg 5 Selections: (4) Mighty Bandit
While Fighter Command has the potential to be much better over 1m4f than he has over shorter, no three-year-old has won this handicap in five editions. Despite his weight allowance, preference is for a similarly unexposed type, from a flat perspective at least, in MIGHTY BANDIT. It looked as though he would be a top class juvenile hurdler in the last jumps season, but drama over his ownership perhaps ensured he did not train on as hoped.
Now that he has had time to settle into Warren Greatrex’s yard, he has impressed on the flat so far. The ground does not hold any fears and a mark of 82 looks workable.
Leg 6: 5.00pm
Leg 6 Selections: (3) Catch Cunningham
There have been excuses the last twice for CATCH CUNNINGHAM, first when he slipped at the start at Chester, and then when stretched by 6f at Doncaster. He is now 1lb lower than when a good second at Nottingham, which proceeded a cosy win at Leicester. Back at this 5f trip, he should be much more at home, and looks a likely challenger if settling.
