16:10 – O’Driscolls Irish Whiskey Claiming Hurdle

Race Details: 2m | | Going: YIELDING | | jumps

This is a fairly interesting little claiming hurdle rather than a high-class one, and the shape of it revolves around whether the classier types can give weight away to some well-treated rivals lower down the list. Hasten Slowly arrives here off a win and looks the obvious one to beat under just 162lb, while Expound has been running well and brings solid recent form for Denis Hogan. Tell Us This and Redwood Queen have the raw ability to get involved if putting their best foot forward, but both come with enough baggage to make you think twice. Desert Cave and Oh So Charming are weighted to be competitive, though neither has been exactly banging the door down. It feels more tricky than strong, and weight concessions could prove decisive over this sharp 2m.

Top Selections

1. Hasten Slowly – 10/3 with Bet365

Jockey: Alex Harvey | Trainer: John C McConnell | Form: U2P461 | Rating: 128 | Topspeed: 107

He makes plenty of appeal in a race like this because he comes here in form, gets in with a fair weight, and his latest win suggests things have clicked again. That 128 rating leaves him with strong claims in this company, especially as several of the more exposed principals have to shoulder 168lb. McConnell’s runners are rarely turned out here without a purpose and this six-year-old still has a bit more upside than some of these older, more battle-hardened sorts. At 10/3 he is no giveaway, but he looks the percentage call in a race lacking depth and reliability. Bet: WIN

Bet: WIN

2. Oh So Charming – 11/1 with Paddy Power

Jockey: Michael Kenneally | Trainer: Declan Queally | Form: 993464 | Rating: 132 | Topspeed: 98

He is not arriving on the back of a standout run, but there is enough in the profile to make him interesting as an each-way play. A mark of 132 is perfectly workable in this grade and, crucially, he carries only 148lb, which is a major help against some better-known names lumbered with much more. His recent form figures suggest he has been holding his level without quite getting the breaks, and in a race full of ifs and buts that can be enough. Declan Queally has another runner in here, but this one looks the more attractively weighted of the pair and 11/1 feels a fair each-way punt. Bet: EACH-WAY

Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

Hasten Slowly is the win play because he comes here in better nick than most and doesn’t have a punishing burden for the grade. For an each-way alternative, Oh So Charming makes more appeal than plenty of the bigger names because of that light weight and a workable rating. Expound is the obvious danger, while Tell Us This is another with enough ability to threaten if putting it all together.

16:42 – O’Driscolls Irish Whiskey Maiden Hurdle (Div I)

Race Details: 2m | | Going: YIELDING | | jumps

This looks one of the more informative maidens on the Tramore card rather than a complete guessing game. Crooked Path sets the standard on what he has already achieved, arriving here after a string of solid placed efforts and bringing a notably strong 130 rating into the race. Hey Now is the obvious threat after shaping with promise in both starts, while Le Tatoue Madrik has bits of form that give him a squeak if brushing up his jumping. Gordon Elliott fields Youknowthecode and the unraced Misery Hill, so there is potential for something less exposed to step forward, but plenty of these have shown very little and the market has them where they belong. The race should be decided by whether proven hurdle form outweighs untapped potential.

Top Selections

1. Crooked Path – 13/8 with Bet365

Jockey: Daniel King | Trainer: Denis Gerard Hogan | Form: 526233 | Rating: 130 | Topspeed: 110

He is hardly hiding his ability now and, in truth, this looks a very workable opening for him to get off the mark over hurdles. Those recent figures of 526233 tell the story of a horse knocking loudly on the door, and his mark of 130 puts him clear of the majority of these on established form. The fact he is a 4yo getting in here on 150lb only adds to the appeal, because he brings the best mix of proven class and a handy weight. At 13/8 he is short enough, but not unreasonably so given how weak plenty of the opposition looks. Bet: WIN

Bet: WIN

2. Le Tatoue Madrik – 6/1 with Bet365

Jockey: Keith Donoghue | Trainer: Gavin Cromwell | Form: 0-03F | Rating: 103 | Topspeed: 52

He makes more each-way appeal than most because there is at least a bit of substance to his profile. The third in his recent sequence suggested he was beginning to figure things out, and although he fell last time, that does not wipe out the fact he was still running in races of this nature with some credit. Gavin Cromwell rarely wastes bullets in ordinary maiden hurdles and Keith Donoghue is a positive booking. He is not in Crooked Path’s league on the figures, but at 6/1 he looks the type to run his race and pick up the pieces if the favourite underperforms or one of the less exposed sorts fails to deliver. Bet: EACH-WAY

Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

Crooked Path is the solid one and the win play, because his form is out in the open and it is better than anything else brought here. For an each-way punt, Le Tatoue Madrik appeals as one with enough hurdle experience to hit the frame in a 17-runner maiden. Hey Now is the obvious danger, while Youknowthecode is the lurker if Elliott’s runner finds improvement.

17:12 – O’Driscolls Irish Whiskey Maiden Hurdle (Div II)

Race Details: 2m | | Going: YIELDING | | jumps

This doesn’t look a deep maiden, but it is a slightly awkward one to price up because the obvious form horse, The Monkey Pole, sets the standard on what he has already shown, while Time Is A Thief could easily leave his bare form behind after just one completed start ended in a fall. Blues Street is another interesting four-year-old from the Gavin Cromwell yard, and the market is likely to keep him honest, while Lord Lackendarra brings the most solid recent placed form among the older brigade. The key question is whether proven maiden-hurdle form beats potential. On balance, I’d rather side with the runner who has already posted the strongest numbers and looks sure to run his race, because plenty of these have shown very little.

Top Selections

1. The Monkey Pole – 5/1 with Paddy Power

Jockey: Jordan Gainford | Trainer: N Dooly | Form: 229 | Rating: 121 | Topspeed: 93

He’s the one arriving with the clearest and strongest hurdle form in the book. Two seconds followed by a ninth may not look spectacular at a glance, but that rating of 121 and topspeed figure of 93 put him firmly on top of what has actually been achieved in this field. In a race where several of the market rivals are trading on promise rather than substance, that matters. Jordan Gainford is a positive booking and, if The Monkey Pole gets into a good early rhythm over this sharp 2m, he ought to be bang there turning for home. Available at 5/1, he looks the percentage call.

Bet: WIN

2. Lord Lackendarra – 17/2 with Bet365

Jockey: Dylan Whelan | Trainer: P J Breen | Form: 836U52 | Rating: | Topspeed:

There’s no sexy profile here, but there is a bit of honesty, and that can be worth plenty in a maiden like this. Lord Lackendarra has been knocking on the door more than once and his latest second gives him a definite each-way squeak against rivals who are still hard to trust. He’s an eight-year-old, so there may not be masses of improvement left, but he doesn’t need to find a stone to get involved if reproducing that latest run. At 17/2 he makes more appeal as a solid each-way punt than some shorter, flimsier types with less established hurdle form.

Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

The Monkey Pole is the win bet because he brings the best established hurdle form and the strongest figures into a race lacking depth. Lord Lackendarra is the each-way alternative at a fairer price, with recent placed form giving him a solid chance of hitting the frame. Time Is A Thief is the danger if Henry De Bromhead’s runner sharpens up plenty for his failed debut.

17:42 – O’Driscolls Irish Whiskey Handicap Hurdle

Race Details: 2m | | Going: YIELDING | | jumps

This is a proper Tramore handicap hurdle puzzle with 19 runners, plenty arriving with patchy profiles and only a few bringing anything like solid recent form. Sheer Raz is the obvious starting point after shaping well on his last two starts and he looks the one with the most persuasive current credentials, but he is short enough in a race where getting a clear run and jumping slickly will matter. Cholo is interesting at the other end of the weights if building on a better effort last time, while Prince Of Air has been knocking around in similar company often enough to give himself a shout again. Kilbarry Ce Ce and Kimy are not easy to trust but both have bits of form that would put them in the argument. Tricky race, but not impossible.

Top Selections

1. Sheer Raz – 9/4 with Bet365

Jockey: Keith Donoghue | Trainer: Gavin Cromwell | Form: 00U-53 | Rating: 96 | Topspeed: 75

Sheer Raz is hardly hiding from the assessor off 96 and, in this field, he is one of the few arriving with genuinely solid recent hurdle form. His latest 3 reads well enough in the context of this race and the prior fifth suggested he was coming to hand after a break. Cromwell does well with these types and Keith Donoghue is exactly the sort you want around Tramore in a big-field handicap where rhythm matters. He is a short price in a messy contest, no question, but he looks the likeliest winner because he is at least going the right way while plenty of these are not. Bet: WIN

Bet: WIN

2. Cholo – 13/2 with Bet365

Jockey: Phillip Enright | Trainer: Michael Butler | Form: 00-005 | Rating: 100 | Topspeed: 72

Cholo has not done much on paper overall, but that latest fifth was at least a step back in the right direction and this low weight of 145 could make him dangerous if he can build on it. He is only five, so there is still room for a bit of progress, and in a race stacked with exposed, unreliable handicappers that matters. Phillip Enright is a positive booking for a horse who may need delivering late, and 13/2 looks fair enough for one who could easily outrun more established but less convincing rivals. He is not bombproof, but as an each-way punt with five places on offer he makes plenty of appeal. Bet: EACH-WAY

Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

Sheer Raz is the win bet because he brings the clearest recent form and looks the most straightforward option in a very untidy handicap. Cholo is the each-way alternative from a handy weight and appeals as the value play with five places available. Prince Of Air is the obvious danger if reproducing one of his better efforts, while Kilbarry Ce Ce is risky but not without hope.

18:12 – O’Driscolls Irish Whiskey Mares Handicap Hurdle

Race Details: 2m 5f | | Going: YIELDING | | jumps

This is a proper mares’ handicap puzzle with 19 declared and plenty arriving with some sort of angle. Might Be The One sets the standard on recent consistency and looks well treated for a 5yo, while Dolly Watkins comes here on the back of a win and has the profile of one still going the right way. Turkey And Ham returns off a break after scoring last time and is another with obvious claims if ready, while Yoursimplythebest is dangerously well enough treated if forgiving that latest pull-up. You can make cases for Jetaway Nana and Fair Damsel too, but this does not look a deep race full of lurking improvers so much as a competitive handicap where current sharpness, getting the trip thoroughly and coping with the ground should sort them out.

Top Selections

1. Might Be The One – 3/1 with Bet365

Jockey: Darragh O’keeffe | Trainer: Andrew McNamara | Form: 742532 | Rating: 101 | Topspeed: 99

She is hardly hiding from the assessor, but there is a lot to like about the way her profile has been building. The recent sequence of solid efforts says she is thriving, and that latest second suggested another race of this nature is well within range. A mark of 101 looks workable for a mare with the best topspeed figure in the field, and being a lightly raced 5yo in this company is a definite plus. Darragh O’Keeffe is a reliable booking for a race where positioning will matter, and at 3/1 with Bet365 she is not a giveaway price, but she is still the one with the fewest questions to answer. Bet type: WIN

Bet: WIN

2. Turkey And Ham – 7/1 with Betfair

Jockey: Mr O McGill | Trainer: Noel C Kelly | Form: 03461- | Rating: 104 | Topspeed: 98

There is a bit more risk attached here because she has been off since that win, but the upside is obvious. She signed off with a victory, travels off a fair mark of 104 and her topspeed figure says that effort was no fluke. This trip should be fine, and in a big-field mares’ handicap I am always interested in one arriving fresh from a stable that can place them sensibly. The amateur booking means she may be overlooked slightly in the market, yet 7/1 looks perfectly respectable when you stack her up against some of the shorter ones. If she returns in the same nick, she has the right shape for a strong each-way play. Bet type: EACH-WAY

Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

Might Be The One is the straightforward win play given her consistency, age and strong recent figures. For an each-way punt, Turkey And Ham makes plenty of appeal at 7/1 in a race paying five places. Dolly Watkins is the obvious danger after her latest win, while Yoursimplythebest is the one who could easily outrun her price if bouncing back from that last-time pull-up.

18:42 – O’Driscolls Irish Whiskey Beginners Chase

Race Details: 2m 5f | | Going: YIELDING | | jumps

This looks a fair beginners’ chase rather than a deep one, and there’s every chance the market has the main answers. Drop A Threat brings the Mullins-Townend combination and is easy to see why he heads the betting, but he does arrive with a few questions to answer after a sequence of solid rather than convincing runs. Gunnery Sergeant makes more appeal on recent form, having finished runner-up on both starts this term, and his profile suggests this trip should suit well. For those looking beyond the obvious pair, Jumping Susie is interesting off a higher rating than most and has the sort of back class that could make her dangerous if taking to this discipline. It’s a race where clean jumping will probably decide plenty.

Top Selections

1. Gunnery Sergeant – 3/1 with Bet365

Jockey: Jack Kennedy | Trainer: Gordon Elliott | Form: 7022 | Rating: | Topspeed:

He’s the one I want to be with. Those two recent seconds stand out in this field and, crucially, they suggest he’s knocking loudly on the door rather than treading water. Gordon Elliott’s 6yo has a straightforward, progressive look to him, and Jack Kennedy is exactly the sort you want aboard in a race where rhythm over fences will matter. At around 3/1, he isn’t a massive price, but he still looks the percentage call against a favourite who has had his chances. If he jumps with the same fluency he’s shown over hurdles, he holds very strong claims of getting this done. Bet: WIN

Bet: WIN

2. Jumping Susie – 7/1 with Sky Bet

Jockey: Michael Kenneally | Trainer: Declan Queally | Form: 453U06 | Rating: 127 | Topspeed: 110

She’s not the most obvious one on recent finishing positions, but the raw figures give her a definite squeak and this is the type of race where that matters. A mark of 127 and Topspeed 110 put her right in the conversation, and against largely unexposed or moderate rivals that makes 7/1 look fair for an each-way play. The recent form is patchy, no getting away from that, but there’s enough substance in her overall profile to think she could outrun her odds if warming to chasing. In a field of 13 with three places on offer, she makes more appeal as a solid each-way punt than some of the shorter-priced alternatives.

Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

Gunnery Sergeant is the win bet and looks the most solid option on current form. For a bit more value, Jumping Susie is the each-way play at 7/1, with her rating giving her a proper chance if she takes to fences. Drop A Threat is the obvious danger on connections alone, but he’s short enough for what he’s actually shown.

19:12 – O’Driscolls Irish Whiskey Handicap Chase

Race Details: 2m 5f | | Going: YIELDING | | jumps

This is a proper Tramore handicap chase puzzle with 17 runners, plenty arriving with bits and pieces of form, and not many you could call bombproof. The market is understandably focused around Toor Moon, Let Him B, Driveonwill and Likable Chancer, while Without Exception and Opposite Ends add further depth to a race where a lot of these are operating in the same band. The C Byrnes pair are obvious players, especially after recent placed and winning efforts, but this looks the sort of contest where a well-treated runner with proven stamina and a clean round can make the difference. On yielding ground at this trip, jumping and patience should matter more than flashy profiles, and there are a few at double-figure prices who are far from hopeless.

Top Selections

1. Toor Moon – 9/2 with Bet365

Jockey: Liam Quinlan | Trainer: Ms M Flynn | Form: 229483 | Rating: 106 | Topspeed: 83

Toor Moon looks the percentage call in a race full of ifs and buts. He has been knocking on the door in stronger-looking handicaps than this, and that latest third suggests he’s still very much in good order. An official mark of 106 is workable enough, and he appeals as the sort who should be well suited by a stamina test around Tramore on yielding ground. There are younger legs in here, but plenty of them have questions to answer, whereas this fellow has been giving his running consistently. At 9/2 with Bet365, he isn’t a wild price, but he does look solid enough to justify favouritism or thereabouts. Bet type: WIN.

2. Without Exception – 15/2 with Bet365

Jockey: Simon Torrens | Trainer: P J Rothwell | Form: -203P4 | Rating: 102 | Topspeed:

Without Exception makes plenty of each-way appeal in a race where reliability counts for a lot. He shaped better than the bare result when fourth last time, and earlier efforts this season suggest he has a race like this in him from a mark of 102. Rothwell’s runners are never easy to dismiss in this sort of staying handicap, and Simon Torrens is the right man for a horse who needs delivering late rather than being asked too much too soon. He doesn’t have the sexy profile of some of the market principals, but 15/2 with Bet365 feels fair in a 17-runner contest with four places on offer. He looks the value each-way punt. Bet type: EACH-WAY.

Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

Keep it straightforward: Toor Moon is the win play because he brings the most convincing recent profile into a race where many have holes in their form. For an each-way alternative, Without Exception looks attractively priced and should be staying on when others have cried enough. The obvious dangers are Let Him B, Opposite Ends and the well-handicapped Likable Chancer.

19:42 – O’Driscolls Irish Whiskey Hunters Chase

Race Details: 2m 5f | | Going: YIELDING | | jumps

This is a proper hunters’ chase puzzle rather than a race to get carried away with, and the market has understandably latched on to I Walked The Line after his winning start in this sphere for Willie Mullins. He’s the obvious one, but short prices in big-field hunter chases can be a dangerous game. Cold Old Fire brings the strongest established profile on ratings and arrives off a solid third, while lesser-exposed types like Catalani, Black Dakota and Vodka Splash add a layer of intrigue. Plenty of these are either out of form, hard to weigh up, or lacking recent substance, so it may come down to who jumps cleanly and handles the scrimmaging that often develops in these races. Tricky enough, but not impossible to solve.

Top Selections

1. Cold Old Fire – 4/1 with Paddy Power

Jockey: Mr E Mahon | Trainer: Raymond Hurley | Form: 76-513 | Rating: 131 | Topspeed: 102

He looks the percentage call. Cold Old Fire has the best rating in the field, a healthy topspeed figure for this company, and his recent form reads well enough in the context of an ordinary enough hunter chase. That win three starts back showed he still knows how to get the job done, and his latest third suggests the engine remains intact. In a race full of guesswork, he brings the most solid body of evidence. Mr E Mahon gets aboard a horse who should travel and jump well enough to put pressure on less battle-hardened rivals. At 4/1, he makes plenty more appeal than the cramped favourite. Bet: WIN

2. Catalani – 13/2 with Paddy Power

Jockey: Mr R James | Trainer: Jack Foley | Form: 3F | Rating: | Topspeed:

Catalani is the interesting each-way play because there is still some upside here and the market has not missed him entirely. He shaped with promise when third on debut in this scene and was still bang there when falling next time, so there is at least a fair chance he’d have been in the finish again had he stood up. In races like this, lightly raced hunters with bits of untapped potential are often the ones to side with. Mr R James is on a horse who should be competitive if his fencing holds together, and 13/2 is fair enough in a 15-runner contest paying four places. Bet: EACH-WAY

Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

Cold Old Fire is the win play on proven ability and the strongest figures in the line-up. For an each-way punt, Catalani makes more appeal than the obvious favourite at the prices, especially with four places on offer. I Walked The Line is the clear danger if building on that debut hunter win, while Black Dakota is another to keep an eye on if the market speaks positively.
