There’s a fascinating renewal of the Weatherbys Super Sprint at Newbury on Saturday afternoon, as it will see runaway Windsor Castle Stakes winner Havana Hurricane aim to follow up that fine Royal Ascot win and dominate another sprint contest. Eve Johnson Houghton’s superstar two-year-old is a red-hot favourite for the contest and looks to be tough to beat, but our tipster Steve Chambers takes on the Listed winner, as he picks out his 1-2-3.
Favourites
An impressive two-length winner over Logi Bear at Goodwood on debut, Havana Hurricane then ran an absolute stormer to finish second in the Woodcote Stakes at Epsom Downs next time out. Sent to the Windsor Castle last month with a leading chance, the son of Havana Gold showed a blistering turn of foot to demolish his rivals in the listed event and a repeat of that effort would see him dominate once again. He is a red-hot favourite to land the spoils again and he showed he can deliver the goods in big fields and in receipt of weight from some notable rivals he has to be extremely tough to beat, if at his best.
Wins at Bath, Salisbury and Sandown catapulted Anthelia into the limelight, but Rod Millman’s juvenile failed to make it four on the bounce when finishing fifth in a fillies’ listed event at Newmarket last time out. Returning to five furlongs from six for this contest, she should pose a notable threat to Havana Hurricane, but may just lack that turn of pace to down that rival.
Ali Shuffle won the Lily Agnes Stakes at Chester back in May, but has struggled to get her head in front on two recent visits to France. However, a second placed finish in a Group 3 at Chantilly would suggest she’s more than capable of landing a notable blow here.
Fresh from July Cup glory last weekend, Richard Hughes is bidding for more big race success and he will unleash Our Cody in this contest and that challenger rocketed to a maiden victory at Windsor last time out and could well be able to continue improvement here and is another available at single-figured odds.
Outsiders
Only a head behind Havana Hurricane in the Woodcote Stakes earlier in the season, Raakeb will look to turn that form around here for Richard Hannon. Seventh in the Group 2 Coventry Stakes at Royal Ascot, the Ten Sovereigns colt then went on to finish fifth in the Superlative Stakes at Newmarket, so a drop back from Group 2 level should see him fair better. He will have to give weight away to all his rivals, but he’s shown some decent form at a high level and could be a terrific each-way value play for this event and with Hannon having won this race four times since 2014 then he looks of interest.
Richard Fahey has three wins in this contest and he will saddle the in-form Cotai Belle, who has won a brace of 5f sprints at Wetherby and Haydock Park. A nursery winner last time out, the daughter of Cotai Glory will have her work cut out here, but has shown she heads to Newbury in the form of her life.
Big Fun broke his maiden tag at the third time of asking at Musselburgh last time out, but had previously finished second on two occasions, so is a real model of consistency on the track and has to be considered, while the likes of Kamakameleon and Irish Fighter are another brace of runners that have to be given the utmost respect in a cracking renewal.
2025 Weatherbys Super Sprint Tips
Havana Hurricane certainly sets the standard and he could just be a cut above here, but RAAKEB ran him close in the Woodcote and with the Hannon team holding such a fine record in the race then that raider could spring a surprise. Havana Hurricane can bag second spot, while Big Fun can continue to improve and claim third position.
