Tuesday is a rare day in which two meetings go to post in Ireland. As well as three cards in Britain, a busy midweek day of racing is in store.
GG tipster Joe Napier visits both sides of the Irish Sea for our lucky 15 tips on the day. He has two tips each from Down Royal and Wetherby for you to follow.
Wetherby Racing Tips (Tuesday 17 March)
Six races are set to be contested at Wetherby on Tuesday. In two of the class 4 handicaps are our two best bets.
2.37 Wetherby – Rath Gaul Hill (1pt win – 10/3)
Little has gone right for Rath Gaul Hill since a win at Newbury last season. However, Sean Bowen is aboard tomorrow for the first time, a potential signal of intent. The champion jockey did not have a great Cheltenham, but is well past the 200 winner mark for the campaign. The selection ran promisingly at Newbury in December in class 3 company before finding that level, and a class 2 at Sandown, too hot since. He has plummeted down the handicap though, sitting on a mark of 113 now. That is 5lb below his last winning mark and the jockey booking is a statement of intent. His best run this season came in first-time cheekpieces, with first-time blinkers applied here for a similar effect.
4.22 Wetherby – Hawthorn Street (1pt win – 5/2)
The O’Neills struck twice at Cheltenham and enjoyed a winner at Uttoxeter on Saturday too. They can claim another success with Hawthorn Street on his handicap debut. The seven-year-old has evidently been trained steadily as it is two-and-a-half years since his point-to-pointing days. He won in that sphere, then was twice fourth over hurdles starting out under rules. However, things then went right at Catterick, as he won a 3m1f½ maiden hurdle there, demonstrating his staying power. The runner-up would have won next time out but for falling when clear, so the form is solid. Furthermore, the handicapper has given him an opening rating of 114 which looks too lenient.
Down Royal Racing Tips (Tuesday 17 March)
Down Royal hosts a Grand National winner on its turf on Tuesday. Joe Napier takes on Nick Rockett, however, among his two tips at the track.
3.38 Down Royal – Gerri Colombe (1pt win – 10/11)
With two of his four rivals surely possessing no chance, it is a surprise Gerri Colombe is only just odds-on. Gordon Elliott endured a tough Cheltenham week, but his former Gold Cup second should be too good here. He was second to new Grand National favourite Grangeclare West in the Bobbyjo Chase last time out. That run, coupled with a third in the Galmoy Hurdle previously, shows he can still produce high quality form. He is not quite the same horse second to Galopin Des Champs two seasons ago. However, he is better than Perceval Legallois and receives 7lb from last year’s Grand National hero Nick Rockett. The latter is his biggest danger, but returns from a near year-long layoff. He will be getting some fitness reps in, whereas Gerri Colombe has race sharpness on his side.
4.13 Down Royal – I Am Lorenzo (1pt win – 10/3)
Top-weight I Am Lorenzo may be able to bounce back from a disappointment at Punchestown last time out. The seven-year-old rarely runs a bad race and got off the mark over fences with a game Fairyhouse display in January. He was a distant third last time out, but that form was boosted when the runner-up was third at Cheltenham. That came in the Grand Annual and I Am Lorenzo is down 2lb for finishing just five lengths adrift of her off level weights last time. Heavy ground may have been too deep for him too. As a result, on a sounder surface, he remains a horse of interest for winning purposes soon.
