Andrew Mount looks to head into the weekend on a positive note. He has three tips for the racing on Friday 7th August, as he heads to Wexford and Haydock Park for his best bets of the day…
Wexford Racing Tips (Friday 7 August 2026)
Seven races take place at Wexford this evening, with a 4.45pm start. Andrew’s selections line up in the 5.16pm and 6.26pm races, respectively.
5.16 Wexford – Chosen Shant (1pt win – 2/1 bet365, 7/4 generally)
I was sweet on the chances of Wexford expert Chosen Shant in a 1m7.5f handicap chase here last month but she found the three-year younger Farrokh too good, going down by a length and three-quarters in second of 13. That took her course record to 4110412 (3-7), improving to 1112 (3-4) in the June to August period. The Aengus King-trained ten-year-old won this race last year and, while I’m not always a fan of chase-ot-hurdles switchers, she’s worth a small bet.
6.26 Wexford – Strong Contender (1pt win – 7/1 BetVictor, Sky Bet, Paddy Power, 13/2 generally)
Strong Contender could only finish eighth of 16 in a 2m6f handicap hurdle at Ballinrobe on July 21st but that doesn’t tell the whole story. There was a huge track bias that day, favouring wide runners, but J J Slevin had Norman Lee’s five-year-old positioned in the ‘swamp’ on the inside rail. The daughter of Jukebox Jury stayed in contention far longer than she was entitled to given her obvious disadvantage and her 18-length defeat was a fine effort in the circumstances. She also caught the eye when keeping on steadily into mid-division on her handicap debut at Kilbeggan in mid-June (drifted late to 40/1 from 18/1) and there are definitely races to be won with her.
Haydock Racing Tips (Friday 7 August 2026)
Only six races take place at Haydock, with a 5.43pm start. You have to wait until the 8.03pm contest for Andrew’s best bet, which is a confident 2pt selection.
8.03 Haydock – Syndicale (2pt win – 2/1 bet365, 7/4 William Hill)
Syndicale, a half-sister to Ombudsman, was very well backed ahead of last month’s debut in a 7f fillies’ maiden at Wolverhampton, despite the disadvantage of stall 1. The inside berth can make life difficult for a newcomer at that venue, as a slow start can leave them trapped behind runners on the rail, facing a sea of kick-back.
That was the case with Karl Burke’s two-year-old who was slightly slowly away and in sixth place as the runners went into the first bend. She still had three to four lengths to make up on the leaders as they approached the final turn, and it looked as front-runner Jazzy Blue had flown. However, she took off when switched out wide and got up to score by half a length after touching odds of 3.3 in running from her Betfair SP of 1.56 (1/2 SP). The switch to turf is likely to bring about improvement and I’m surprised that she’s not favourite ahead of Silver Sovereign.
