A rain-swept day’s racing is expected on Thursday 15 January and our top tipster Andrew Mount heads to Wincanton and Newcastle for his best bets of the day.
Currently top of the horse racing naps’ table, Andrew has a brace of selections for Thursday’s racing and we look at his best bets meeting by meeting below.
Wincanton Racing Tips (Thursday 15 January 2026)
It’s Somerset National day at Wincanton with the action beginning at 12.07pm, but Andrew opts to veer away from the marathon showpiece and heads to the 1.52pm for his best bet on the card.
1.52 Wincanton – St Luke’s Chelsea (0.5pt e/w – 10/1 bet365, 8/1 generally)
St Luke’s Chelsea is a 14-race maiden but wasn’t beaten by far when a 12-1 fifth under a patient ride over course and distance on his penultimate start and he caught the eye when an 11-length fifth to Premier at Taunton next time. Sent off at 9-1 that day, Robert Walford’s five-year-old pressed the early pace under Harry Kimber but did too much too soon and the race was set up for the closers, with the first four home receiving the comments “held up in rear”, “held up in rear”, “midfield” and “held up in rear” from the Racing Post. The sixth (“midfield”) and seventh (“midfield”) also came from off the pace and he had seven lengths to spare over the next front-runner to finish, eighth-place Freddie Fleetfoot. That one re-opposes today but, hopefully, Kimber will have learnt his lesson and a more measured ride can see him in the frame. The Robert Walford/Harry Kimber combination is usually worth following in jumps handicaps, with 42 winners from 180 bets (23.3% strike-rate) for a profit of £69.37 to a £1 level stake at SP (expected winners = 28.59, A/E = 1.47). I intend to save on Freddie Fleetfoot and combine the pair in a reversed forecast.
Newcastle Racing Tips (Thursday 15 January 2026)
There’s a bumper eight-race card over the sticks at Newcastle and Andrew’s nap on the card is an eye-catching contender in the 3.10pm contest.
3.10 Newcastle – Emotional Roller (1pt win – 13/2 bet365, 6/1 generally)
The Joel Parkinson and Sue Smith yard has a fine record in January and their sole previous starter in 2026, Killycarn, left his previous form well behind when successful at Catterick on New Year’s Day. Emotional Roller broke his duck in January last year, landing a 3m1f handicap chase at Catterick, and though 0-6 since he placed on four occasions and could be ready to strike after his Uttoxeter fifth on New Year’s Eve. The recent outing will be helpful after the cold snap and backing the yard’s January runners since 2016 would have found 54 winners from 239 bets (22.6%) for a profit of £107.22 to a £1 level stake at SP (+£155.24 at Betfair SP after 2% commission). The first-time blinkers could help this sometimes-lazy sort and the yard’s record in this headgear since 2015 reads 123F1 (2-5), with the wins at 8-1 and 15-8.
