It’s day 3 of the Ebor Festival at York on Friday 21st August, with the Nunthorpe Stakes the feature race of the day. Andrew Mount has a brace of big-priced selections for the Group 1 sprint at 3.35pm, whilst he has two other bets running on the Knavesmire today.
York Racing Tips (Friday 21 August 2026)
It’s a 1.50pm start at York on Friday, with the action taking us right through until 5.20pm. Here are Andrew’s best bets for York today.
2.25 York – Caballo De Mar (1.5pt win – 9/4 William Hill, 2/1 generally)
Since 2015 (11 renewals) simply backing horses aged five or six in the 2m Lonsdale Cup would have found eight winners from just 26 bets for a profit of £23.32 to a £1 level stake at SP (+£37.91 at Betfair SP after 2% commission, expected wins = 4.55, A/ E = 1.76). The clear pick of today’s five qualifiers is the George Scott-trained Caballo De Mar, who has been given 64 days to get over his Ascot Gold Cup flop where he did too much too soon out wide and had nothing left at the finish. The ground was much faster than ideal that day and he can bounce back now that underfoot conditions have come in his favour.
3.00 York – Arapaho Gold (1pt win – 11/4 William Hill, Unibet, 5/2 generally)
Arapaho Gold impressed when scoring on his debut at Thirsk in early May, running green but powering away to score by two and a half lengths from Kodiak Breeze, who won his next two. The Michael Dods-trained colt followed up in facile fashion when upped to 6f at the same venue two months later and completed his hat-trick with victory in a 6f Listed contest at Newbury, doing well to score by a neck from the outside draw having been hampered and set alight early. The 4-1 shot traded at 9.2 in running (from a Betfair SP of 5.7) and a clean start should see him make a bold bid to maintain his 100% record.
3.35 York – Redorange (0.5pt e/w – 33/1 William Hill, 28/1 generally) & Fitzella (0.5pt e/w – 80/1 bet365, William Hill)
The rain has thrown the Nunthorpe wide open and there are two runners I want to play to small each-way stakes. First up is Redorange who clocked a good speed figure (the second highest last time out rating according to Proform) when landing a Listed race over C&D last time. On paper, the Clive Cox-trained four-year-old wasn’t best drawn in stall 12 of 13 (non-runner adjusted) that day but it helped him as he has always seemed best when drawn on a rail or on the outside of the field. He has stall 18 of 18 today, which will prompt plenty pf pundits and punters to dismiss him but he’ll get a good tow into the race from Partisan Hero (stall 17) and could surprise, despite being unproven on the ground.
On the opposite side of the track, I want to be with Hugo Palmer’s Fitzella (stall 1), who also clocked a good speed figure for her latest effort (joint-fifth best) when an 11-1 fifth at Chester. Usually a front-runner, she missed the break that day and was unable to adopt a prominent position. She stayed on well when in the clear, looks the pace angle on the far side and her breeding suggests that she could improve for the slow ground.
