Andrew Mount focuses his attentions on Day 1 of York’s Ebor Festival on Wednesday 19th August. He has a whopping five tips for today’s racing on the Knavesmire, which includes a brace of picks in the 4.10pm contest.
1.50 York – The Man (1pt e/w – 9/2 bet365, William Hill, 4/1 generally)
The Richard Spencer-trained The Man has only raced twice at York since being gelded and undergoing wind surgery ahead of the 2025 Flat season, landing a 5f handicap at the Dante meeting before his narrow second to Trefor in last year’s renewal of the 5f 89y heritage handicap. He’s 3lb lower ahead of Wednesday’s opener after a string of unplaced efforts but several of those came in Dubai and there was more promise in his 13th of 22 finish behind Stablemate Twilight Calls at Goodwood than his finishing position suggests, as the 22-1 shot blew the start and came back with a wound on his left-hind leg. The price is nothing special in such a big field but he’s going to be very difficult to keep out of contention. I did consider Gold Start Hero – a good trends-fit – but he seems happiest in small fields – and course winner Ziggy’s Triton, but he’s yet to win above Class 4 level.
2.25 York – Gentle Hurricane (1pt win – 11/2 bet365, 5/1 generally)
Since the beginning of 2020, Andrew Balding is six from 32 with his second time out two-year-olds who were successful on their debut and backing them blind returned a profit of £13.67 to a £1 level stake at SP (+£17.15 at Betfair SP after 2% commission). Two of those ran in this 7f Group 3 contest – last year’s 11-2 winner Gewan and Imperial Fighter, runner-up at the same price in 2021. Gentle Hurricane failed to settle at Salisbury on last month’s debut, but the son of Invincible Spirit still won by a length and a half from favourite Soldier Of The Sea and looks the value against the Irish raiders Haffner and Trean.
4.10 York – Mountain Road (1pt e/w – 14/1 generally) & Team Player (0.5pt e/w – 11/1 William Hill, BetVictor)
The Jim Goldie-trained Mountain Road emerged best of those ridden patiently when a 10-1 third in the Shergar Cup Stayers at Ascot last time and the seven-year-old looks set to run a big race in this 2m heritage handicap. York is regarded as a front-runners’ track but this race often goes to a late closer and his only run at this trip in a big field since joining his current handler produced a 9-1 win in a field of 13 at Thirsk in late May. Since 2015 (11 renewals) had we backed all 35 runners in this race who finished in the top three last time out under a hold-up ride we’d have hit seven winners and made a profit of £27.75 to a £1 level stake at SP (+£38.63 at Betfair SP after 2% commission expected wins = 2.96, A.E = 2.36).
Team Player also qualifies on the same trends angle as Mountain Road and he’s also worth an each-way punt. Since joining current handler Ewan Whillans, his record reads 11592 (2-5), with the fifth place excusable as he was drawn wide in the Chester Cup, the ninth place (in a field of 20) also forgivable as it was hard to come from off the pace in the Northumberland Plate and the runner-up effort by a short head behind the progressive Shrimp Shady (re-opposes today).
4.45 York – Poatan (0.5pt e/w – 10/1 bet365, William Hill)
Trainer George Scott does well with his handicap debutants, scoring with 36 of the 199 qualifiers (18.1% strike-rate) for a profit of £9.32 to a £1 level stake at SP (+£47.53 at Betfair SP after 2% commission). Those who started as favourite were 21 from 39 (53.9%) for a profit of £23.82 at SP. Poatan is unlikely to start at the head of the market but his Sandown Listed third on his seasonal debut in June was achieved in a fast time and he’s finished in the frame in four of his five starts, with the exception on soft ground at Goodwood where he did too much too soon.
