Four tracks go racing in Britain and Ireland on Tuesday, with jumps action at Hexham alongside the flat at Yarmouth and the Curragh before Newcastle takes over under the lights. Andrew Mount heads to Yarmouth’s flat fixture for his two best bets of the day.
4.03 Yarmouth – Pixie Diva (1pt win – 13/2 bet365, Hills)
When I first looked at the five-day entries for this 5f handicap I had expected to be tipping Marching Mac, who runs well at this time of year and handles soft ground well. Phil McEntee’s trailblazer will appreciate the drop down to Class 4 level after his mid-division effort in a big-field Class 3 handicap at Haydock where he did too much too soon and helped to set it up for the closers.
I advised him in this column that day but suspected that there might be a pace collapse, so also recommended an each-way bet on 22-1 runner-up Al Hussar, one of only two runners that Proform’s pace map suggested would be ridden patiently. Sadly, the other hold-up performer – 12-1 shot Proof – proved just too strong (I’m still kicking myself for not doing the forecast).
Today, we could also be in for a pace collapse as Marching Mac is likely to be taken on for the lead by Diomed Duke, Loleeta and Fiorella Princess. Therefore, I’ve switched allegiance to George Scott’s Pixie Diva who, like Call Time (see 5.08 preview), looks well drawn towards the stands’ side. She remains unexposed at this trip on turf, the ground shouldn’t be an issue on breeding and Oisin Murphy takes the ride. After all I’ve said about Marching Mac, I will have a saver on him.
5.08 Yarmouth – Call Time (1pt win each-way – 7/2 generally)
With short-priced favourite Koffee And Kale proving very hard to win with (one from 18 and yet another second place over C&D latest, albeit narrowly) and the frustrating second favourite Rory’s Royale wearing first-time blinkers, this looks an attractive race to bet in.
With the ground having turned soft the one to side with is last month’s dual Ffos Las winner Call Time. Stan Moore’s gelding was denied a hat-trick when second to Rambuso Creek at Nottingham last time but raced a little closer to the strong early pace than the winner, third and fourth and the officially good to soft going was quicker than ideal.
I’m expecting his high draw (stall 9 of 9) to prove helpful today as the wind (from the far side and likely a crosswind or half into their faces) will hit the low drawn runners first and those drawn more towards the stands’ side will be able to get cover. He tends to peak at this time of year and has form figures in sprint handicaps on straight tracks from August 1st onwards of 2213112 (3-7), suggesting strong each-way claims.
