Billy Loughnane will become Godolphin’s new retained rider from December, joining William Buick in a two-jockey arrangement for the operation.
It is a huge appointment, but one that follows a season in which Loughnane has already established himself at the very top of the British Flat. He is the newly crowned champion jockey and arrives at Godolphin having built a strong association with Charlie Appleby’s Newmarket string.
A natural next step after a breakthrough season
Loughnane’s year has been defined by continuing his rapid ascent at the age of just 20. He ran away with the jockeys’ championship and claimed a first Breeders’ Cup success by slimming down to his lowest ever riding weight.
His partnership with George Boughey supplied the biggest moments, headed by Bow Echo’s 2000 Guineas, St James’s Palace Stakes and Sussex Stakes campaign, but his work for Appleby has evidently been seen as laying foundations by his owners. Godolphin have wasted no time in snapping him up while the opportunity is available.
Loughnane won the Champagne Stakes on Desert Castle for the ownership and has already had the chance to ride some of the Godolphin two-year-olds likely to matter next season. That familiarity makes this feel like a move that has been building through the summer.
Buick remains central to the team
The appointment does not alter Buick’s position. Godolphin have confirmed that he will continue as one of their two retained jockeys, preserving the partnership that has delivered so much success for the operation over more than a decade.
That gives Appleby and Godolphin real strength in depth as they prepare for 2027. Buick has long been the rider associated with the stable’s biggest days, while Loughnane brings the momentum of a champion season and the appetite of a jockey still adding new chapters to a remarkable early career.
What it means for the Godolphin pecking order
There will be no shortage of interest in who rides which horse once the new arrangement begins. Loughnane has connections of his own to maintain, particularly with Boughey, but a retainer with Godolphin places him at the centre of one of the sport’s most powerful teams.
One of the earliest signs of the Loughnane-Buick dynamic will come in next season’s 2000 Guineas. Desert Castle is likely to be the first string if fit ahead of Rock Montreal. Whoever is declared as the former’s rider will give a strong inclination as to who is prioritised for the remainder of 2027.
