GG Hot List, Monday 2 November: Two Commanders tops the list on three signals for Wolverhampton

The GG Hot List checks every runner in Britain and Ireland against five signals: market support, independent naps, course form, trainer form and the jockey’s record at the course. Today’s leader is Two Commanders in the 17:00 at Wolverhampton, the only one of nine qualifiers with three signals. It is napped twice, Edward Bethell’s stable has 5 winners from 17 runners over the past fortnight, and Billy Loughnane has won on 171 of his 856 rides at Wolverhampton since 2010. The market has not moved for Two Commanders, so the biggest backed runner on the list is Walk In The West, cut from 10/1 to 9/2 at Plumpton.

How the GG Hot List works

A runner needs at least two of the five signals below, and at least one of them must be market support or naps. That way, everything on the list has attracted attention today.

  • Market: the median bookmaker price at least 30% shorter, with ten or more bookmakers cutting by 20% or more.
  • Naps: two current naps, or one from a tipster with a top-three nap record over the past 28 days.
  • Course: at least two wins at today’s course, with a strike rate of 25% or better there.
  • Trainer: 25% winners or better from at least ten runners over the previous 14 days.
  • Jockey: a strike rate of 18% or better from at least 50 rides at the course.

Runners whose price has drifted since it opened are left out. The list is ranked by number of signals, then market move, then number of naps. It contains no more than ten runners, the thresholds are not lowered on a quiet day, and non-runners are excluded before publication. Nine runners qualify today from four meetings, after Fakenham was abandoned. Computeform and Ratings Hub finished level on strike rate for the third top-three nap place over the past 28 days, so both count as top-three tipsters, and Chinese Whispers qualifies on that basis. Course and jockey records come from our database, which covers races from 1 January 2010, so they show records since then rather than full careers.

What our expert thinks

GG racing writer Billy Grimshaw on today’s list topper, Two Commanders:

“Two Commanders tops the list without any help from the market. The two naps, Edward Bethell’s five winners from 17 in the past fortnight and Billy Loughnane’s record at Wolverhampton all point the same way, and it’s won twice and been placed three more times in its last six runs. The price has barely moved from 2/1, though, and Chantelle, rated a pound higher, has won two of four starts here. I think it’s got a good chance, but 2/1 doesn’t leave much in hand and I wouldn’t be rushing in at that price.”

Billy Grimshaw, GG

1. Two Commanders · 17:00 Wolverhampton

Two Commanders is napped by Jim Delahunt in the Scottish Sun and Templegate in The Sun for the first division of the All Weather Championship Is Back Handicap over seven furlongs. Edward Bethell trains the three-year-old, and his stable has had 5 winners from 17 runners over the past 14 days, a 29% strike rate. Billy Loughnane rides at 9st 11lb and has won on 171 of his 856 rides at Wolverhampton since 2010, a 20% strike rate. Whose NAP to trust

These are the nap tipsters with the best strike rate over the 28 days to Sunday 1 November, and their picks today. Computeform and Ratings Hub tie for third:

The most-napped horse of the day is Kocktail Bleu in the Southern Cranes Handicap Hurdle at 14:30 Plumpton, with seven naps. Naps are its only signal, so it misses the list: the price has shortened only slightly, from 9/4 to 2/1, and Tom Cannon’s 103 winners from 601 rides at Plumpton since 2010 is a 17% strike rate, just under the jockey mark. Bold Step, the second most-napped horse with five, has drifted from 13/8 to 2/1 and is left out. You can see every nap in Today’s Naps Table.

Biggest backed moves this morning

The three biggest market moves of the morning all miss the Hot List because none has a second signal:

These are price movements, not recommendations.

How yesterday’s Hot List did

Sunday’s Hot List had eight runners and three of them won. Obsessedwithyou (6/1) led again after two out and held on gamely in the Listed mares’ chase at Carlisle, Briery Rose (9/1) led approaching the last at Huntingdon and won readily, and Keops Des Bordes (11/10) made all in a Carlisle novices’ hurdle. List topper We’re Red And Blue (7/4) was second at Carlisle, beaten a length and three-quarters, and Theatre Tom (6/5) led two out but was headed at the last and finished second at Worcester, beaten six and a half lengths. To Chase A Dream (3/1) was eased and finished last of nine finishers at Carlisle, beaten around 23 lengths, Orderly (14/1) was seventh of seven in the Carlisle bumper, beaten around 28 lengths, and Perry Mason (13/2) was 20th of 21 at the Curragh, also beaten around 28 lengths. A £1 win bet on each at starting price returned £19.10 from £8 staked, a profit of £11.10. Past performance is not a guide to future results.

Prices checked at 08:36 GMT on Monday 2 November and subject to change. Market moves use median bookmaker prices; trainer form covers 19 October to 1 November; course and jockey records cover races since 1 January 2010.
