GG Hot List, Tuesday 13 October: Hamaleel backed from 10/1 to 4/1 for Wolverhampton

The GG Hot List checks every runner in Britain and Ireland against five signals: market support, independent naps, course form, trainer form and the jockey’s record at the course. Today’s leader is Hamaleel in the 17:30 at Wolverhampton, the biggest market move among ten qualifiers. The price has shortened from 10/1 to 4/1 with 22 of 24 bookmakers cutting, and Billy Loughnane has ridden 165 winners from 833 rides at the course, a 20% strike rate. No runner reaches three signals today.

How the GG Hot List works

A runner needs at least two of the five signals below, and at least one of them must be market support or naps. That way, everything on the list has attracted attention today.

  • Market: the median bookmaker price at least 30% shorter, with ten or more bookmakers cutting by 20% or more.
  • Naps: two current naps, or one from a tipster with a top-three nap record over the past 28 days.
  • Course: at least two wins at today’s course, with a strike rate of 25% or better there.
  • Trainer: 25% winners or better from at least ten runners over the previous 14 days.
  • Jockey: a strike rate of 18% or better from at least 50 rides at the course.

Runners whose price has drifted since it opened are left out. The list is ranked by number of signals, then market move, then number of naps. It contains no more than ten runners, the thresholds are not lowered on a quiet day, and non-runners are excluded before publication. Ten runners qualify today, which fills the list, and an eleventh, Kodi Lion at 16:47 Leicester, which has two naps and trainer form, is left out by the cap. Computeform and Ratings Hub finished level on strike rate for the third top-three nap place over the past 28 days, so both count as top-three tipsters. That does not change today’s list.

What our expert thinks

GG racing writer Billy Grimshaw on today’s list topper, Hamaleel:

“Hamaleel tops the list on the market move and the rider. Going from 10/1 to 4/1 is a heavy cut, with 22 of 24 bookmakers going shorter, and Loughnane wins around a fifth of his rides at Wolverhampton, so I can see why it’s there. I’d want a bit more than that, though. The form figures end in a 7, it’s only rated 75 and Light The Night Up is on the same mark. At 4/1 the market has done a lot of the work already, so I’d call it a fair chance rather than a bargain.”

Whose NAP to trust

These are the nap tipsters with the best strike rate over the 28 days to Monday 12 October, and their picks today. Ratings Hub and Computeform tie for third:

The most-napped horses of the day are Irish Nectar and That’s Random in the Join Racing TV Now Handicap at 15:39 Leicester, with four naps each. Naps are their only signal, and neither price has moved enough, so both miss the list. You can see every nap in Today’s Naps Table.

Biggest backed moves this morning

The three biggest market moves of the morning all miss the Hot List because none has a second signal:

How yesterday’s Hot List did

Monday’s Hot List had ten runners, nine ran and two of them won. Woolridge (11/2) made all at Newcastle and went clear inside the final furlong, while Fear And Fast (17/2) led inside the final furlong at Musselburgh and just held on. Atmosphere (3/1) was second at Newcastle, beaten a neck, Second Fiddle (4/1) fourth and Maria Da Silva (5/2) fifth in the same Newcastle fillies’ handicap, and First Folio (11/1) was fourth at Yarmouth. Canaria Queen (9/1) was seventh at Musselburgh, Yorkshire Glory (10/1) tenth at Newcastle and Earls (11/1) eleventh at Roscommon. Island Bridge did not run at Worcester because of unsuitable ground. A £1 win bet on each runner at starting price returned £16.00 from £9 staked, a profit of £7.00. Past performance is not a guide to future results.

Prices checked at 08:32 BST on Tuesday 13 October and subject to change. Market moves use median bookmaker prices; trainer form covers 29 September to 12 October.
