A listed event kicks off the action at 1.15pm. There’s a whole host of other competitive races throughout a sparkling afternoon at Newcastle.
1.50 Newcastle – BetMGM All-Weather 3 Year Old Championships Handicap – Monarch’s Gold (1pt each way – 14/1)
Placed in four of his five career starts, Monarch’s Gold has been a real model of consistency for Kevin Philippart De Foy. Looking to build on that fine record, the Too Darn Hot colt bids for glory in the 3 Year Old showpiece at 1.50pm. Second on his last starts, which came at Southwell, the handicapper has left him on a mark of 92, which certainly looks workable. Plenty of improvers line up here, but having shown bundles of ability on the track so far he looks a real solid each-way bet at double-figured odds for the 6f contest.
3.00 Newcastle – BetMGM All-Weather Championships Mile Handicap – First Principle (1pt win – 10/1)
First Principle narrowly edged out Dosman when the pair clashed at Wolverhampton in March. The pair will do battle once again in the mile showpiece at 3pm. Both have been given a rise by the handicapper, so will have to do more here. However, First Principle certainly looks capable of franking the form. Not out the first two in his last four starts, which has seen him get his head in front twice, the William Haggas-trained raider is a handicapper on the rise. The four-year-old is capable of continuing his progression despite the 3lbs rise. A mark of 96 won’t be enough to stop him landing this valuable pot.
4.10 Newcastle – Midnite All-Weather Easter Classic Middle Distance Handicap – Teumessias Fox (1pt each way – 16/1)
Fifth in the trial race for this contest back in January, Teumessias Fox will be looking to improve on that effort at 4.10pm for Andrew Balding and Jason Watson. He’s been dropped a further 1lb in the handicapper since that run, so he lines up off 99 on Friday. It’s been over a year since his last victory, but that success did come off a mark of 100, so he’s certainly well weighted, should he produce his best. Plenty stand a chance heading into this event, but the Balding raider is one that looks attractively handicapped and can spring a shock.
4.42 Newcastle – Midnite All-Weather Easter Plate Marathon Handicap – Dramatic Star (1pt win – 8/1)
A winner on his sole visit to Newcastle, Dramatic Star will return to Newcastle for the marathon contest and can be another winner for the abovementioned Haggas. Sixth over an inadequate trip at Kempton at the start of last month on his comeback, the Sea The Stars five-year-old will enjoy a return to Friday’s trip of 2m 56y. He’s yet to race beyond two miles, but with victory in that Newcastle over a mile-and-a-half he certainly shaped like this trip shouldn’t be an issue. Plenty line up with a bigger reputation, but off a mark of 93 he looks well handicapped to run a big race.
