1.10 Cheltenham – Bardenstown Lad (1pt win – 7/2 generally)

This 3m novices’ chase features an opposable 7-4 favourite in the shape of Mister Coffey, who lines up here on the back of eight straight defeats. Irish trainers rarely bother with this race, so it’s interesting to see two of them represented. I’m siding with the John McConnell-trained BARDENSTOWN LAD, though will have a tiny stake-saver on Gordon Elliott’s Indigo Breeze, who caught the eye from off the pace in last season’s Coral Cup.

McConnell has a solid record with his non-Festival Cheltenham runners, scoring with eight of the 26 qualifiers prior to Saturday’s racing for a profit of £37.88 to the usual £1 stake. Those stats include a win from Bardenstown Lad at the October meeting last year and he’ll come on for September’s modest fifth at Listowel on his chase debut.

2.55 Cheltenham – First Impression (0.5pt E/W – 25/1 Paddy Power + Betfair, 18/1 generally)

In-form John Quinn’s FIRST IMPRESSION, who can race keenly, will be suited by the likely decent gallop in the Greatwood and is worth a small interest. He goes well at this time of year provided he’s had a recent run, recording form figures from September to November when returned to the track withing five weeks of 31125121414 (5-11) for a profit of £22.61.
