3.50 Doncaster – BURNING CASH (1.5pt win – 4/1 generally)

Like most Paul Midgley-trained sprinters, BURNING CASH tends to peak in the summer, with his three wins coming in June/July. Since his racecourse debut, his record in this two-month period stands at 218110 (3-6), improving to 2111 (3-4) in fields of 11 or fewer runners. The sole defeat came on his second career start when 25-1 at Hamilton and the last two wins came at Doncaster on good or faster going, one of them in this race 12 months ago. He suggested his turn was near when a 20-1 fifth of 14 to Chipstead at York late last month and looks sure to run a big race.

5.35 Doncaster – CUBAN RED (1pt E/W – 11/1 888Sport, 10/1 generally)

CUBAN RED finished a solid 18-1 fourth of eight over an inadequate 5f trip at Redcar last time and looks interesting now back up to 7f. That Redcar race was typical for the track, with low-drawn prominent racers strongly favoured – the winner made all from stall 1 and runner-up Storm Fox, a winner at Leicester next time raced prominently from stall 2. The patiently ridden/poorly drawn sixth, Borough, finished second at 14-1 next time, improving his RPR (Racing Post Rating) by 13lb, while seventh-placed Cavalier Approach, also ridden patiently from a poor high draw, improved his RPR by 24lb when a close-up 66-1 fifth at Beverley on his next outing. Cuban Red ran over today’s course and distance last August, finishing two and half lengths behind the winner when a 150-1 seventh, and is 10lb lower this time around.
