1.15 Longchamp – NATIVE AMERICAN (1pt win – 9/1 generally)

NATIVE AMERICAN impressed on fast ground at York on his debut, bolting up by more than five lengths despite starting at 10-1 for a novice stakes. The beaten horses haven’t done much for the form, but he could only beat what was put in front of him and proved that was no fluke with an odds-on success in a valuable sales race at the Curragh next time. The ground, officially good to yielding that day, was “as slow as he would like it” according to jockey Colin Keane and he looks worth a crack at this Group 1 contest despite having taken an unorthodox route to Longchamp. Native American’s sire, Sioux Nation, landed the 2017 Norfolk Stakes in a field of 17 runners, but he raced with just three rivals on the far side of the track. His other three wins came in fields of just five, seven and eight runners and his small-field preference seems to have been passed on to his progeny. Backing two-year-old progeny of Sioux Nation in fields of ten or fewer runners in Britain and Ireland would have found 43 winners from 190 bets (22.6% strike-rate) for a huge profit of £122.29 to a £1 level stake at SP and Richard Fahey’s colt faces just nine rivals today.

3.50 Longchamp – STAY ALERT (1pt E/W – 20/1 Bet365, 16/1 generally)

STAY ALERT is ground dependent and, since her racecourse debut, has form figures on officially good/faster turf or an all-weather surface of 1211526 (3-7). Both unplaced efforts came at York and it’s fair to assume that she simply doesn’t enjoy that track. Her connections felt that she might have given Via Sistina more of a race (she finished a two-length 25-1 second) had she not met with trouble in running in the Group 1 Pretty Polly Stakes at the Curragh and she looks over-priced today.

4.25 Longchamp – KERDOS (1pt E/W – 11/1 888Sport & Betfred, 10/1 generally)

KERDOS returned to form with victory in the Beverley Bullet last month, a run that took his record in September/October to 111 (3-3). That was only his second outing at the minimum trip on good/faster going and the other saw him run second (by a neck) of 26 in the Palace of Holyroodhouse Handicap at Royal Ascot, and he looks a solid each-way play in the Prix de l’Abbaye with the ground in his favour and he’s certainly better drawn (stall 4) than the market leaders.
