2.40 Doncaster – ERNEST GRAY (1pt win, 11/2 William Hill, 5/1 generally)
Regular readers of my work will know that I’m not a big fan of Alan King’s yard, but I want a small interest on ERNEST GRAY, as the market looks to have over-reacted to his 25-length fourth of six at Kempton last time. That run was safely ignored as he jumped out to his left on the right-handed track, and he’ll be much happier back at left-handed Doncaster. The seven-year-old won a 3m handicap hurdle at this time last year on his only previous course outing and today’s small field will suit. His record this way round in single-figure line-ups reads 14171 (3-5), with the seventh place excusable as it came on his chase/seasonal debut. He impressed me with his attitude when scoring at Southwell on his penultimate start and the first-time visor could bring about improvement.
3.40 Huntingdon – DIBBLE DECKER (1pt win – 4/1 bet365 & Spreadex, 7/2 generally)
DIBBLE DECKER landed an overnight gamble in a 2m4f handicap chase at Wincanton last time, prevailing by half a length from Iconic Muddle (who runs in the 3.15 at Doncaster today). Tom Lacey’s eight-year-old now has form figures over 2m-2m5f on right-handed tracks, outside of his seasonal debuts, of 119111 (5-6), with the sole defeat in a race worth over £50,000 to the winner. He’s three from three at today’s venue and holds solid claims.
4.35 Leopardstown – YOUNG DEV (1pt e/w – 7/2 Coral, Ladbrokes & Spreadex)
The ground is the key to the prospects of YOUNG DEV in this 3m4.5f handicap chase and with it already described as heavy with an inspection planned it should be perfect for him. Denis Hogan’s ten-year-old won well at Navan last time to take his record on heavy going (judged on race times, not the official verdict) to 1162321313018341 (6-16) for a profit of £33.50 to a £1 level stake at SP.
