GAILLARD DU MESNIL – 2pts win (3/1generally)

Mighty Potter, 5-4 favourite for today’s race had four and a half lengths to spare over GAILLARD DU MESNIL when the pair clashed in a 2m4f Grade 1 novice chase at Fairyhouse in early December, but the runner-up was left with plenty to do under a patient ride. He was much happier back at Leopardstown just after Christmas when keeping on strongly to land the 3m Neville Hotels Novice Chase, another Grade 1 contest. That win took his course figures to 1131 (3-4), with the defeat at 33-1 in this race last year when just over 14 lengths behind 4-9 stablemate Galopin Des Champs. The Cut back in trip is not ideal but he looks value to reverse Fairyhouse form with Mighty Potter.

LEOPARDSTOWN 2.10
BLUE LORD/SCEAUX ROYAL – 1pt straight forecast

Blue Lord bids to make it six wins from six runnings of this Grade 1 contest for Willie Mullins after the victories of Min (2018, 2019) and Chacun Pour Soi (2020, 2021, 2022). He was only third to Edwardstone in last season’s Arkle Chase at the Cheltenham festival but his record in Ireland, since fitted with a tongue-tie, reads 111111 (6-6), including an impressive victory over course and distance in the Grade 1 Paddy’s Reward Club Chase over Christmas. He’ll be hard to beat and is priced accordingly (around 2-7) but the straight forecast/Exacta could be the way to play this race. The one I like for second place is Alan King’s veteran SCEAU ROYAL, in the same ownership as Blue Lord. He has only scored once from 17 starts in Grade 1 company but will appreciate the small field and could out-run his odds. He’s won 15 of his 31 career starts in fields of six or fewer runners (+£11.44 to a £1 level stake at SP) and finished as runner-up on eight occasions.
