3.20 Lingfield – LION RING (1pt win – 7/2 BetMGM & BetUK, 10/3 generally)
The temptation when looking at this 5f handicap is to conclude that there will be a pace burn-up and the race will be set up for a closer, such as Man On A Mission or So Sleepy, the front two in the betting. However, it’s been very difficult to win from off the pace over the shorter trips at Lingfield of late and I’d rather side with prominent-racer LION RING who hasn’t had many opportunities at this trip on Polytrack. Andrew Martin’s five-year-old only went down by a head in second over course and distance in late September when the cheekpieces were reapplied and the combination of 6f trip, wide draw and first-time blinkers didn’t help at Kempton next time where he burnt himself out and trailed home last of 12. That race worked out incredibly strongly for the grade and he won well returned to the minimum trip, again with the cheekpieces re-applied, when 22-1 at Chelmsford next last time. Stall 7 will help him to avoid what is usually a ‘dead’ rail at this time of year and he can sit on the shoulder of likely leader Boom The Groom (stall 6) before pouncing late.
