2.00 Naas – AN TOBAR (1pt EW – 8/1 William Hill, 7/1 generally)
Since the Lawlor’s of Naas was elevated to Grade 1 status in 2015 it has been dominated by horses who contested a Grade 1 or Grade 2 contest on their latest start, with seven winners (from 22 runners) in nine renewals for a profit of £24.60 to a £1 level stake at SP. Those that started as favourite in their latest start were five from seven. The Henry De Bromhead-trained AN TOBAR could only finish third when 5-2 favourite for the Royal Bond Novice Hurdle at Fairyhouse last time but it was a big ask to win that Grade 1 contest on the back of his maiden hurdle win – it’s hard to bridge the gap from maiden hurdle winner to Grade 1 hurdle winner in a single step – and his trainer won this with Bob Ollinger a few years ago.
2.15 Plumpton – RAMO (1pt win – 11/2 William Hill)
The Venetia Williams-trained RAMO is a dour stayer who seems happiest on a sharp track. This would explain his underwhelming effort at wide/galloping Newbury last month where he came home 26 lengths behind the winner when a 4-1 eighth of 12. The seven-year-old fared better in a Pertemps qualifier at Carlisle next time, finishing an eight-length second to the progressive Howlingmadmurdock, rallying to regain that position after looking set for a modest third. His two previous runs over today’s course and distance produced a three-length win and a narrow second (beaten by a neck) and he looks good value to bounce back to winning ways.
