ABU MALEK could only finish eighth of ten when a 9-2 shot over course and distance last month but he never had a prayer against the strong draw bias. It was a huge advantage to race hard up against the stands’ side rail that day, favouring high draws, and he was always in no-man’s land from stall 2 (non-runner adjusted).
The first five home came from stalls 10, 9, 7, 8 and 6. Abu Malek also got a bump at the start that day but still managed to finish three and a half lengths in front of Cuban Breeze (stall 3), who has franked the form with two subsequent successes. His other two runs produced a 6f Doncaster wins and neck second over 5f at the same venue, and he remains open to plenty of improvement.
