12.30 Catterick – CAPTAIN WESTIE (2pt win – 3/1 generally)

Jimmy Moffatt has a fantastic record at the first time of asking with horses he takes over from other trainers, with 11 winners from 50 runners since 2015 for a profit of £98.00 to a £1 level stake at SP. The last three qualifiers all won (9-2, 50-1 and 9-2) and CAPTAIN WESTIE, runner-up in an Irish bumper and an Irish point, looks worth a punt to upset odds-on favourite Broomfield Present.

2.15 Catterick – CERENDIPITY (1pt win – 12/1 Bet365, 10/1 generally)

Having highlighted the claims of Sue Smith’s yard in my ‘January Jumpers’ I was kicking myself for not tipping up her runners at Catterick on New Year’s Day which included winners at 28-1 and 7-2. She has a fantastic record in the month of January, scoring with 62 of her 238 runners since 2014 (26.1% strike-rate) for a huge profit of £170.57 to a £1 level stake at SP.  Those impressive figures include an 18 from 45 haul (40% strike-rate) at Catterick. CERENDIPITY, a respectable 20-1 fifth of 11 at Haydock last month on his first start following a wind operation, looks worth chancing at a nice price.
