VISIONARIAN – 1pt win (16/1 generally)

Paul Nicholls’ Stage Star heads the market for the Grade 1 Manifesto Novices’ Chase – Aintree’s opener on Thursday – but he might have been flattered by his win in the Turners Novices’ Chase at last month’s Cheltenham festival where he was allowed to dominate. Since 2009, his trainer has run 14 horses in this race, and all were beaten, often at short prices…

Chapoturgeon (Fell, 15-8)
The Nightingale (3rd, 11-4)
Royal Charm (3rd, 100-30)
Al Ferof (3rd, 6-5)
Cristal Bonus (2nd, 7-1)
Fago (5th, 11-2)
Dodging Bullets (5th, 9-1)
Vibrato Valtat (2nd, 9-4)
Bouvreuil (4th, 16-1)
Frodon (5th, 5-1)
Modus (5th, 14-1)
Cyrname (4th, 2-1)
Hitman (3rd, 100-30)
Pic D’Orhy (Pulled up, 7-2)

…the one to take him on with at a price is Peter Fahey’s VISIONARIAN. The eight-year-old usually struggles in the winter months, recording form figures from November to February of 257026 (0-6), compared to 12152112 (4-8) from March to October. His first post-February start of the year has produced form figures of 111 (3-3) and he could surprise.

AHOY SENOR – 1pt win (11/2 generally)

AHOY SENOR tends to improve as the season goes on, with form figures from January to April of 2111211F (5-8) including wins at this meeting in each of the past two seasons (66-1 and 4-1). Lucinda Russell’s eight-year-old wasn’t suited by the big field in the Gold Cup, falling six out when still in contention, and should be able to boss his five rivals from the outset.

POLITACUS – 0.5pt e/w (40/1 generally)

Fergal O’Brien saddled Lutinbella to finish a best-of-the-British-runners 50-1 third in this mares’ bumper last year and I’m expecting a similarly big run from his POLITACUS. She’s improved with each of her four runs according to Racing Post Ratings and scored with something up her sleeve at Ascot last time. She was especially eyecatching on her second outing when a 125-1 fifth of 16 behind Queens Gamble in Listed company at Cheltenham, finishing just over two lengths behind 100-30 stablemate Bonttay. Proform gave her the best last-time-out speed figure for her Ascot win, and she could out-run her huge odds.
