1.50 Newmarket – CASTLE WAY (1pt win – 9/2 Paddy Power/Betfair, 4/1 generally)
It’s been typically difficult to score from off the pace on Newmarket’s July Course this season and CASTLE WAY could be in receipt of a relatively easy lead in the Group 3 Bahrain Stakes, assuming the tactics aren’t changed now that he steps up in trip. SO far this year, we’ve had 35 races on the July Course and no less than 13 winners made all or most of the running, with another 19 winners racing prominently. Those ridden patiently have won just three races from 88 runners. William Buick, seven from 18 on the course this year (including three from three on pacesetters) takes the ride.
2.50 Carlisle – SHERDIL (0.5pt e/w – 25/1 Bet365, 16/1 generally)
Ryan Sexton turned a good draw into a bad one by switching SHERDIL (stall 9 of 11) to the far side soon after the start of the 5f handicap at Pontefract last Monday, on a day when the outside route was strongly favoured. Backed from 16-1 into 10-1, Paul Midgley’s second string fared second best of his group, finishing just behind 100-30 stablemate J R Cavagin. His best efforts have come at Beverley but Carlisle (he has yet to race here) is similar in nature and he’s worth chancing at a big price. His stall 5 of 13 draw should be useful, as the market leaders (in particular pace angle Elladora) are all drawn low.
3.25 Carlisle – MAY BLOSSOM (1pt e/w – 15/2 888Sport, 7/1 generally with the firms paying three places)
On paper, the 5f Claire McCarthy Takepayments Fillies’ Handicap at Doncaster last week looked like it would be a burn-up with a possible pace collapse but those who raced on the front end fought out the finish, with The Big Board (‘in touch with leaders’) scoring by one length from Jeans Maite (‘led’). MAY BLOSSOM, a neck back in third, fared best of the closers and David O’Meara’s four-year-old looks worth another chance. Her yard has recently ended a quiet spell and today’s stiffer track will suit, as four of her five wins have come at Beverley (twice), Leicester and Pontefract.
