1.50 Newbury – ERMIN STREET (1pt E/W – 14/1 generally)

ERMIN STREET has found some consistency since fitted with a tongue-tie and will appreciate the switch from Bath where he has caught the eye from off the pace on multiple occasions this term. His 16-1 sixth of 14 on May 1st was his most noteworthy effort, as the first three finishers were described by the Racing Post as ‘made all’, ‘prominent’ and ‘raced in second’. The patiently-ridden seventh, Gert Lush, landed a gamble at Sandown next time, Far Horizon, sixth from a midfield sit, ran second at Chepstow next time and Zuraig, 13th after blowing the start, won a seller at 15-2 next time. Ermin Street’s two subsequent runs have both taken place at Bath – a two-length fifth and five-length fourth, latterly when second best of the closers – and the change of venue looks ideal. There should be plenty of pace on in this amateur riders’ handicap and Megan Wingrove has steered home three winners (16-1, 14-1 and 8-1), two seconds (28-1 and 8-1) and three thirds (8-1, 13-2 and 11-2) from just 16 rides.

8.15 Haydock – DANDYS DERRIERE (1pt win – 20/1 generally)

Low draws dominated in the opening 7f handicap at Redcar on May 29th with Danzart (stall 6 of 15) leading home runners drawn 4, 5 and 3. DANDYS DERRIERE, sent off at 20-1 from his poor draw in stall 12, was held up in rear by Alistair Rawlinson. Switched widest of all for a run, he could never get competitive and finished 12 lengths behind the winner in 11th place. He was well clear of the horses in stalls 13, 14 and 15 and left the impression that he would have been a place contender from a lower draw. That was only his third start for his current yard, and he could take a step forward tonight.
