1.50 York – DESIGNER (2pt win – 8/1 Bet365 + Coral, 7/1 generally)

DESIGNER was a huge eyecatcher at Bath last time, doing clear best of those to race up with the strong early pace when a 14-1 fourth of 14 in the Listed Lansdown Stakes. White Lavender, who started as the 11-4 favourite that day, was third best of the prominent racers in a five-length ninth and came out to win a Group 3 at Longchamp next time while Nymphadora, the prominently-ridden 11th (beaten by seven lengths) won at Chester on her next outing. She landed a 17-runner fillies’ handicap at the Ebor meeting on her only previous course outing, and she has won against male rivals before.

5.20 York – CHESSPIECE (1pt win – 6/1 Bet365, 5/1 generally)

CHESSPIECE impressed when making a winning debut in a 1m2f maiden at Newcastle in November as he was poorly drawn towards the inside rail in stall 2 and took up the running much earlier than ideal. He ran with great credit in a 1m2f Newbury novice last month, finishing just over four lengths behind Military Order (now favourite for the Derby) in third, despite racing closest to the stands’ side rail where the ground was appreciably slower. The Crisfords show a profit with handicap debutants (62 from 242, 25.6%, +£18.05 to the usual £1 stake) and I’m surprised he’s not vying for favouritism for this 1m4f Class 3 contest.

8.15 Fontwell – GOOD NEWS (1pt win – 9/1 Bet365, 6/1 generally)

GOOD NEWS disappointed at Plumpton last time but was very weak in the betting and, with the benefit of hindsight, Class 3 company was too hot for the Lydia Richards-trained veteran. If we combine his visored runs, Class 4 or lower company and a relatively recent run (within eight weeks) his record becomes 1P4111114 (6-9) for a profit of £28.50 to a £1 level stake at SP, improving to 1111 (4-4) when Tom Cannon is riding. Cannon is back on board for the first time in almost a year and he can bounce back tonight.
