My bet on John Butler’s Pink Jazz at Wolverhampton yesterday never looked like being landed and I wish I’d read Hugh Taylor’s ATR column before betting him. He pointed out that George Wood was just one from 90 when riding for the Butler yard – it’s now one from 91. I did a little research into what happened to these John Butler-trained/George Wood-ridden runners when they had a different jockey on board next time and the results were interesting – seven winners from 40 bets (17.5% strike-rate) for a profit of £26.08 to a £1 level stake at SP (expected winners = 3.12). In all-weather handicaps only, the score was five from 18 for a profit of £28.08. UZINCSO, tenth of 13 in a 1m Class 3 handicap here 12 days ago when ridden by Wood, might do better down in grade with Danny Muscutt on board. Before you think I’ve gone full conspiracy-nut I should point out that the seven-year-old does seem to have a clear class barrier, having failed to score in his seven attempts above Class 4 level. His record over tonight’s 1m trip, in Class 4 or lower company on the all-weather, stands at 63111141154390 (6-14) for a profit of £11.50. improving to 11114113 (6-8) when starting in the front two in the betting (+£17.50). At the time of writing, he was the sixth choice in the betting in this eight-runner line-up, but I’ll throw one point at him now with a view to topping up shortly before the off if the money arrives.
