3.35 Chepstow – ON EDGE (1pt E/W – 4/1 generally)

With last night’s Yarmouth winner Eight Mile lining up again under a 12lb penalty, ON EDGE has drifted to a backable price and I’m happy to back him each-way, even though we’ll lose a small percentage of our stake if he’s second or third. Christopher Mason’s five-year-old carries a 5lb penalty for last week’s course and distance success, which took his record over the 6f trip here to 131 (2-3), with the defeat by three-quarters of a lengths when blowing the start and hanging badly to his left.

5.45 Leopardstown – INVINCIBLE LARNE (1pt win – 6/1 generally)

I’m keen to oppose the hard-to-win-with SUPER CUB in this 7f apprentice handicap and I’m surprised that he’s trading as low as 3-1 favourite with some bookmakers. He’s scored just once from 25 starts and was only fourth when the 5-2 favourite at Listowel last time, again looking trip-less. I’d much rather side with the ex-Scott Dixon INVINCIBLE LARNE. He ran a cracking race over course and distance on his stable debut last month, going down by a length and a half in second place at 33-1 behind Amanirenas, who went in again at Fairyhouse last week. The third, 7-2 favourite Coins Cross, was short-headed on his return to Leopardstown next time, and the fourth, Imposing Supreme, finishing a solid sixth of 22 at the Curragh before scoring at Bellewstown. It’s tricky backing front-runners in apprentice handicaps as their inexperienced pilots can sometimes get the fractions wrong and do too much too soon but he’s well drawn and looks worth chancing.
