It’s not been easy to make ground from off the pace over the shorter trips at Wolverhampton in recent months and subsequent events suggest that 15-2 shot Strike Red was winning against the pace when coming from midfield to score in a 6f Class 3 handicap here on October 1st. The runner-up, third and fourth were described as ‘led’, ‘pressed leaders’ and ‘pressed leader’ and the winner followed up at odds of 12-1 at York, despite having finished well beaten on his previous visits to the Knavesmire. DUBAI STATION also came from midfield in that October 1st race, staying on into fifth place, three and a half lengths behind the winner. Robert Cowell’s five-year-old is just one from 20 on turf but hasn’t had many opportunities on the all-weather, scoring twice from five runs. His only other Tapeta run saw him land the Group 3 Chipchase Stakes at Newcastle back in June 2020 and, while it’s a slight worry that his three career wins have all come a few days either side of June 1st, he should encounter the required fast pace tonight – Tippy Toes and Bergerac both like to go from the front – and he’s worth chancing. I’ve saved on Spring Bloom, bred to appreciate the switch to Wolverhampton’s Tapeta surface for the first time.
