1.55 Exeter – BLUE BEACH (1pt win – 13/2 bet365, 6/1 generally)

Mel Rowley’s BLUE BEACH caught the eye when second of 15 to Ilovthenightlife in the Grade 2 mares’ novices’ hurdle at Newbury in March, doing best of those to come from off the pace, and her subsequent Huntingdon defeat can be excused as the race came too soon, just 22 days after Newbury. The six-year-old has a great record when fresh, recording form figures of 1212 (2-3) when rested for more than one month with the other runner-up effort to You Wear It Well – subsequently successful in the Dawn Run at the Cheltenham festival – on her reappearance at Worcester last term. Quicker ground would have been preferable, and she meets some of her rivals on unfavourable terms, but her yard is in good form and she’s worth a small interest.

8.00 Chelmsford – DAYTONA LADY (1pt e/w – 11/1 Paddy Power & Betfair, 9/1 bet365)

DAYTONA LADY went into my tracker after her five-length fifth to Girl Magic on the turf course at Lingfield in May. The stands’ side ‘golden highway’ was fully operational that day and it was a big advantage to race on the rail, with the winner and runner-up emerging from stalls 8 and 7 and of 9. Daytona Lady wasn’t badly berthed in stall 6 but she was switched to challenged widest of all and did well to finish so close given her obvious positional disadvantage. Her patient style was no help at Wolverhampton next time where she fared third best of the closers in a 14-1 seventh of 11, after which she left John Ryan for the Ruth Carr yard. Her stable debut run – a 33-1 ninth of 12 at Newcastle – was clearly needed after a 112-day break but she showed plenty more at Wolverhampton next time, keeping on well into a close-up 28-1 fourth. Her slow-starting tendency is an obvious worry for Chelmsford but she’s well drawn, there should be plenty of pace on and her yard does well with their course runners.
