4.35 Listowel – LORD ERSKINE (1pt win – 14/1 generally)
LORD ERSKINE won this race back in 2017 and he landed the 1m6f handicap at this meeting last year. The veteran van usually puts in a shift when returned to the track within four weeks of his latest outing, winning eight of his starts under these conditions for a profit of £57.35 to a £1 level stake at SP, including two from two at Listowel. His high draw could help, assuming the inside of the track gets churned up (the last three winners of this race were drawn 14, 12 and 14) and the ground has come in his favour.
5.17 Ayr – HIGHFIELD VIKING (1pt win – 4/1 Bet365, 3/1 generally)
I was half-interested in Cassy O and Merricourt in this 7f Class 6 handicap, but both are on long losing runs and I’m going to side with John Quinn’s three-year-old HIGHFIELD VIKING. The son of Aclaim was a soft-ground 6f Doncaster winner in April on his first start after a gelding operation and he only went down by neck over today’s trip at Catterick last time, again on soft ground. Since 2010, backing his yard’s runners at Ayr would have found 45 winners from 240 runners (18.8% strike-rate) for a profit of £62.91 to a £1 level stake at SP and it’s interesting to see him fitted with a first-time visor. Highfield Viking’s trainer is showing a profit of £52.00 this century with three-year-old handicappers in this headgear and the forecast rain will aid the cause.
