Jane Williams’ chasers tend to learn to their craft on the track rather than at home and I’m happy to forgive INTERNE DE SIVOLA’s indifferent jumping on his debut over fences at Warwick last month where he finished 41 lengths back in third. That was at a time when the yard’s runners were well short of peak fitness, and some were also suffering with an infection. Williams ran three other horses at that November 1 Warwick meeting – Romancero Le Dun, who did a fine bucking bronco impersonation before unseating at the first flight, Favori De Sivola, who finished over 25 lengths back in fourth place, and 40-1 shot Moorland Rambler, a modest fifth in the 2m handicap hurdle. All three improved at the next time of asking – Romancero Le Dun and Favori De Sivola won at 7-1 and 13-2 respectively, while Moorland Rambler was third at 9-1. Interne De Sivola is out of the handicap here but looks worth chancing at a big price.
DIAMOND RANGER – Southwell 6.00 (1pt win – 7/2 Bet365, 10/3 generally)
DIAMOND RANGER was unlucky to bump into course expert Civil Law when a half-length runner-up at Wolverhampton on his penultimate start where he was perhaps not helped by ducking up the inside to challenge. William Buick was on board for the first time when the gelding ran third at Chelmsford next time and it’s interesting to see the cheekpieces go on tonight. Buick gives excellent feedback to connections and horses who wear first-time headgear after he’s ridden them often improve. The return to Tapeta will suit.
