3.15 Wincanton – FLAGRANT DELITIEP (1pt win – 3/1 bet365, 11/4 generally)
FLAGRANT DELITIEP ran an eyecatching race on his reappearance at Plumpton and built on that with a 12-length third in Class 3 company over today’s course and distance. I was initially disappointed by his defeat but the pair that beat him – Huelgoat and Enjoy Your Life – are both progressive and two years younger. He drops to Class 4 company today and the last time he ran over course and distance at this level, without headgear, he won by eight and a half lengths off a 5lb higher mark than today’s.
7.30 Wolverhampton – BEAUTY CHOICE (1pt win – 14/1 bet365, 10/1 generally)
BEAUTY CHOICE was on the receiving end of a strong draw bias when only seventh of ten in a 6f amateur riders’ handicap at Newcastle last time and could bounce back tonight. High draws dominated in that Gosforth Park contest, with the six highest-drawn horses filling the first six places (stalls 8, 10, 9, 7, 6 and 5). BEAUTY CHOICE out-ran his stall 1 draw that night and will be happier back at Wolverhampton. His three handicap wins have come on left-handed tracks (two of them here, the other at Pontefract) and his full Wolverhampton record reads 1261 (2-4), with the defeats off handicap marks of 84 and 82 (he runs off 71 tonight).
8.00 Wolverhampton – NEVER DARK (1pt win – 9/2 generally)
NEVER DARK often makes the running and is ideally served by small fields, landing six of his 19 starts in single-figure line-ups for a profit of £24.83 to a £1 level stake at SP (he’s won just once from 28 starts in fields of ten or more runners). Those small-field figures include a two from two haul over the 5f trip at Wolverhampton and he’s worth a punt in this seven-runner contest, as the early market may have over-reacted to his modest effort on heavy ground at Catterick last time.
