1.00 Southwell – BASE NOTE (1pt win – 11/2 William Hill)
BASE NOTE did really well to finish second by three-quarters of a length in the Listed Quebec Stakes at Lingfield on New Year’s Eve as he was drawn in stall 1 and raced on the inside rail for much of that 1m2f contest. He did challenge away from the ‘dead’ rail in the straight but the winner, 5-4 favourite Tyrrhenian Sea, was wider still. Simon & Ed Crisford’s five-year-old has a five from 16 record on the all-weather including form figures on Tapeta of 2211252 (2-7), with the fifth place excusable as he was hampered on multiple occasions and hit on the nose by a rivals’ whip.
1.05 Gowran Park – INTERSKY SUNSET (1pt ew – 5/1 Sky Bet)
INTERSKY SUNSET caught the eye when fourth over fences at Tramore on her penultimate start, doing well to finish with 14 lengths of the winner after jumping poorly and racing in the ‘swamp’ on the inside rail. She was heavily backed when returned to hurdles at Clonmel next time, finishing a four-length third of ten, and looks interesting now back at Gowran Park, the scene of her sole previous win under Rules. The cut back to 2m is of some concern – her course win came over 2m4f – but the heavy ground and likely strong pace should ensure that her stamina comes into play and she’s worth an each-way punt.
7.15 Newcastle – MATTY TOO (2pt win – 14/1 bet365)
MATTY TOO doubled up over a straight 7f on his first two starts for Ed Dunlop last summer and though zero from five since, all those runs took placed on turning tracks. The five-year-old also won over a straight 7f at Leicester in October 2022 on his final outing for Tim Easterby and his full record in handicaps on straight tracks, regardless of trip, reads 114541569111 (6-12), improving to 111 (3-3) over 7f only. He’s yet to finish better than seventh in a trio of all-weather starts but all took place on unsuitable tracks, and he looks a likely improver now returned to a straight 7f.
