2.25 Leopardstown – APPRECIATE IT (0.5pt E/W – 22/1 generally) + I AM MAXIMUS (0.5pt E/W – 25/1 Betway, 16/1 generally)

APPRECIATE IT is clearly best on left-handed tracks, often jumping out to his left on right-handed tracks and hanging left-handed around right-handed bends. His full record left-handed stands at 1121117134 (6-10), including Leopardstown form figures of 11113 (4-5) with the sole defeat behind El Fabiolo over 2m1f on unsuitably fast ground at last season’s Dublin Racing Festival. He hasn’t raced in this direction since his four-and-a-half-length fourth to Stage Star at last season’s Cheltenham festival where his patient style was a big disadvantage on the New Course. The big question mark is today’s 3m trip, but he wasn’t beaten far in Grade 1 company at the Punchestown festival when last attempting this distance and he makes each-way appeal.

I AM MAXIMUS is another who could benefit from the return to a left-handed track, despite having won at right-handed Fairyhouse the last twice. He jumped out to his left when landing the 3m5f Irish Grand National on his final run last term and didn’t jump fluently when successful over an inadequate 2m4f in Grade 1 company on his seasonal return. He fared best of the hold-up horses when fourth to The Real Whacker and Gerri Colombe in the Brown Advisory when last racing left-handed and, at the age of seven, he could have plenty more to offer.

3.23 Catterick – HAJEY (1pt E/W – 16/1 generally)

HAJEY could only finish a 21-length sixth of eight when 14-1 for the Paxtons No1 CaseihDealer In UK&Ireland Handicap Hurdle at Sedgefield on November 16th but Tracy Waggott’s six-year-old tends to come to hand post-Christmas. His record from late December until the end of February stands at 31121 (3-5) and he could have been unbeaten in three runs at today’s venue but for some sloppy hurdling. The six-year-old finished a massive 35 lengths of the third when runner-up (beaten by less than four lengths) in this race 12 months ago and should be fit enough to do himself justice on his fourth start of the current campaign.
