12.20 Limerick – FORZA MILAN (1pt E/W – 6/1 888Sport, 5/1 generally)
Ten-year-olds, the youngest age group eligible to take part in veterans’ handicap chases, outscore their older rivals by some way. We can’t make money by backing all the ten-year-olds but siding with the ones who finished sixth or worse on their latest start has proved to be a good angle, with 69 winners from 455 runners (15.2%) for a profit of £112.32 to a £1 level stake at SP. The logic being that they were probably taking on younger rivals, often conceding weight to them, in a better class of race. That is certainly the case with FORZA MILAN, who finished a 22-1 eighth in the 3m3f Grade 3 handicap chase at Cheltenham’s November meeting. His wins have come in the mud over trips shy of three miles and he has ideal conditions today.
3.10 Doncaster – ANNIE MC (1pt win – 5/1 generally)
ANNIE MC could only finish a 24-length third of four behind ZAMBELLA at Carlisle last time but that was her first run for almost a year, and it would have been needed. Her record in mares’ chases when returned to the track within six weeks of her previous run reads 11111 (5-5) and she looks good value to reverse the form today. Any rain will improve her chances.
