2.35 Newmarket – SEA MASTER (1pt win – 7/1 888Sport, 6/1 generally)

Mark Johnston’s handicappers used to excel on the July Course at Newmarket and the chances are that his son, Charlie, who now holds the licence in his own name, will follow a similar path. Since the beginning of 2012, backing Johnston-trained handicappers at Newmarket in June, July or August (most of these would have been on the July Course, except in 2020 when the Rowley Mile was used in the summer after racing opened up after lockdown) would have found 75 winners from 374 bets (20.1% strike-rate) for a profit of £76.43 to a £1 level stake at SP (A/E = 1.31). Charlie Johnston has had a 9-4 winner and a 13-2 third from this year’s two previous qualifiers and SEA MASTER, the sole runner from his three entries at the five-day stage for the 1m4f contest, looks worth chancing under William Buick, despite beating only one home behind shorter-priced stablemate Bulldog Spirit at Doncaster last time. The switch to patient tactics for the first time in his short career might have been a shock to the system that day and I expect he’ll be closer to the pace this afternoon. Buick is eight from 21 when riding for the yard in summer handicaps at Newmarket (+£20.54).

7.15 Leicester – FLORAL SPLENDOUR (1pt win – 10/3 Bet365, 3/1 generally)

FLORAL SPLENDOUR is 0-7 since scoring on her debut for another yard last July but has shown enough this term to suggest that there are more races in her. Iain Jardine’s four-year-old clocked a fast time when a one-length second to United Front at Beverley on her latest start and now drops from Class 4 to Class 5 level. Her latest run has already been franked by 125-1 sixth Park Street, who came out to record a 40-1 success when returned to Beverley on Tuesday and by the time you read this, United Front may have given the form another boost in the Carlisle Bell.
