4.20 Newcastle – SWISS ACE (1pt e/w – 8/1 BetVictor, 15/2 generally)
SWISS ACE caught the eye against the draw bias when a three-length seventh of ten in a 6f handicap at Hamilton last summer and looked unlucky over 7f at Newcastle next time where he met trouble in a field of 13. He also encountered traffic trouble from the start when beating only a couple home at Wolverhampton on his latest outing and it’s probably no coincidence that his two wins have come in fields of just eight and five runners. He’s been off the track for 152 days but has form when fresh and today’s eight-runner line-up looks perfect for him.
5.50 Chelmsford – LETMELIVEMYLIFE (1pt win – 8/1 Bet365, 6/1 generally)
LETMELIVEMYLIFE went into my tracker after his two-length seventh of ten at Lingfield in August 2021 where he tried to make ground on the ‘dead’ rail. He disappointed on turf the next twice for two new trainers but showed plenty more in a 7f handicap at Lingfield last month on his debut for in-form Sean Curran, staying on strongly to grab fourth at 9-1 on his first run for 175 days. He looks well drawn in stall 3 and his full record at tonight’s 7f trip reads 13154 (2-5), including a course and distance success.
7.00 Chelmsford – SHADES OF SUMMER (2pts win – 3/1 888Sport, 11/4 generally) + ARAIFJAN (1pt win – 10/1 generally)
We often see horses drawn wide scratched with self-certificates in 6f sprints at Chelmsford, but SUMMER OF SHADES (stall 12 of 12) was allowed to take her chance in a Class 5 handicap at the Essex venue when we last saw her 105 days ago. James Tate’s filly broke smartly, eased into a prominent position behind front-runner Araifjan and was in the perfect stalking position after two furlongs. There was only going to be one winner from some way out and the two-length winning margin could have been at least double that. Her record now reads 22211 (2-5), improving to 11 (2-2) at Chelmsford only.
ARAIFJAN was unlucky to bump into the progressive Alafdhal earlier this winter, finishing second to that rival on no less than three occasions. Tapeta hasn’t been ideal in his recent starts and he’s best judged on his course and distance figures of 2122 (1-4), including a runner-up effort to Shades Of Summer when favourite to beat that one in November. I’ll be forecasting the pair too.
