12.35 Lingfield – FELTON VELLEVUE (1pt E/W – 20/1 generally) + TWILIGHT GLORY (1pt E/W – 9/1 generally)
The form of FELTON BELLEVUE’s 34-length fourth in the Trusttrader Approved And Reviewed Trades People Handicap Chase at Warwick on November 7th has received several boosts – the winner, Percy Veering, followed up at Ffos Las on November 22nd, runner-up Imperial Alex ran second by a neck at Newcastle on November 23rd, third-placed Mixedwave was a 4-1 winner at Market Rasen on the same day while Ali Star Bert, almost 54 lengths back in sixth, did this column a favour when landing a gamble at Southwell on Tuesday (9-2 from 12-1, rule 4). That Warwick outing – his first since May – was probably needed and his latest run over today’s course and distance saw him finish second by a head off a 7lb higher mark than today’s.
Tim Vaughan’s TWILIGHT GLORY, who finished just behind Felton Bellevue when fifth in the same Warwick race on his reappearance, is also worthy of support. The seven-year-old narrowly beaten Bellevue into second place over track and trip in February and runs off the same mark today.
12.40 Thurles – FAROUK D’ALENE (1pt win – 17/2 William Hill, 8/1 generally)
I wrote the following about FAROUK D’ALENE after his fall in L’Homme Presse’s race at the Cheltenham festival in 2022…
‘FAROUK D’ALENE was probably booked for second place when falling two out in the Brown Advisory and will be one to side with at Punchestown. He has made mistakes and occasionally jumped out to his right on left-handed tracks previously and might prove best right-handed. His record that way round reads 1112 (3-4), with the defeat by a short head.’
We didn’t see Gordon Elliott’s eight-year-old until he reappeared after a break of 613 days at left-handed Navan 11 days ago and he again took a tumble, this time departing at the first fence when 12-1 for the Troytown Handicap Chase. The quick return suggests no ill effects from that mishap and the switch to right-handed Thurles looks ideal.
3.10 Taunton – IMPERIAL MEASURE (2pt win – 2/1 generally)
I’m jumping on the bandwagon with IMPERIAL MEASURE, who ran third in a Class 5 handicap hurdle at Exeter on November 10th that has worked out unusually well. Asian Spice and Danton, the winner and runner-up, returned to Exeter to land their respective races last Sunday, fourth-placed Little Pi was backed from 8-1 into 100-30 when scoring at Ludlow on Monday where the Exeter seventh, Only Fools, was also successful at 5-1. Loudspeaker, beaten by just over 33 lengths into eighth place, won over fences at Doncaster next time (17-2) while the sixth and tenth ran second/third at big odds (18-1 and 28-1) in the same race at Wincanton next time. Proform has Imperial Measure top on their last-time-out speed figures for division one of this 2m3f handicap hurdle and his that Exeter eight-length third of 16 looks rick-sold in the context of today’s race. I downgraded him from a 3pt to 2pt selection because of a slight suspicion that he might prove best left-handed.
